Richard Hughes WILL re-sign special midfielder
At this moment in time Liverpool need another midfielder.
Fans are dreaming about Elliot Anderson or Adam Wharton. Someone who can control and dictate the middle of the park. A player who can drop deep and create chances out of nowhere.
Wharton and Anderson are pace-setters. They make things happen on the pitch and they give their teams rhythm and control.
Right now, Liverpool don't quite have a profile like that.
Arne Slot has Ryan Gravenberch who is very good at reading the game and then bringing the ball out from the back with his runs. There's Dominik Szoboszlai who can play that role but he's needed further forward for his ability to counter-press.
Ideally the perfect combination for Liverpool would be to sign a third midfielder alongside them who is more of the Wharton or Anderson ilk.
But what if Richard Hughes doesn't have to go all out and spend big money to get that? What if he could just re-sign a midfielder who already knows the club inside and out, and who has spent the majority of his career at Liverpool.
Someone who learnt by playing alongside Thiago Alcântara and who was praised for his footballing intelligence by Jurgen Klopp on several occasions.
Well, he exists. His name is Tyler Morton and he's long been one of the most underrated footballers at the club, before his ultimate sale to Lyon this summer.
Morton is one of the most technically gifted midfielders in England and he's exactly the type of passer and controller in the middle of the park that Liverpool need right now.
He's showcasing that at Lyon, where he recently registered an assist against Paris Saint Germain and put in a brilliant performance.
But it's not just that game alone. Overall among U23 midfielders, he ranks in the top five for defensive duels won (67%), for expected assists (0.10 per 90 minutes), passes (43 per 90 minutes), long passes (3.96 per 90 minutes) and for progressive passes (5.5 per 90 minutes).
He's simply showcasing why he's exactly the type of player Liverpool have lacked, and why it's inevitable that Hughes will re-sign him.
As per The Athletic, Liverpool have a 20% sell-on clause from Morton's future sale. This is on top of the 5% they already get from him being an academy player.
So, it means that Hughes can re-sign him for an absolute bargain and with a discount price compared to his market value.
