Liverpool need more centre-backs and Richard Hughes is eyeing up another potential move.

January is going to be on the horizon very soon for the club's sporting director, and it's going to be an opportunity for him to rectify what went wrong in the final hours of the summer window.

Liverpool thought they had gotten their man. They had thought they had pulled off a blinder by signing Marc Guehi. But right at the very end Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal.

It has subsequently put the Reds in a difficult position. Giovanni Leoni's injury suffered just a few weeks later has decimated Arne Slot's options.

Now he's very reliant on Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate playing the majority of games for Liverpool, with Joe Gomez as his only possible option to rotate the two.

There's Rhys Williams and Wataru Endo, who could potentially be considered as a centre-back but neither of those options fill you with confidence.

They might be able to ride through a game in the League Cup or the FA Cup. But they can't be trusted to play week in, week out in the Premier League.

For that Hughes needs to bring in an experienced and seasoned professional. Someone ready to step into Van Dijk's shoes.

Guehi could be a perfect option. However, Liverpool won't move for him in January knowing they could get him for free if they just waited a few more months.

In the January window they could explore other options.

This includes Bayern Munich's South Korean defender Kim Min-jae according to Flashscore. The report claims that the Reds are among several Premier League clubs monitoring his situation.

Kim is currently on the periphery at Bayern and it seems like both sides are willing to part ways with each other.

The 28-year-old is a very experienced player who has won league titles both with Bayern and Napoli. During a certain period a few years ago he was regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world.

Things have not turned out for him too well at Bayern but he's still a decent option and an upgrade on Williams and Endo.

The report claims Bayern would not want to lose him for anything less than the €50m they paid for his services. At that price it would be a steep move for Liverpool.

But perhaps a loan with an option to buy in January may not be the worst proposition.
