At 22-years-old, he's the future. There are few players in his age group who are better than Wirtz right now. The youngster has the potential to be one of the biggest names in football in the next decade to come.

To bring him to Liverpool, Hughes is clearly prepared to pay a premium. Anfield Watch understands, Bayer Leverkusen want to sell the German international for £125m.

That's a remarkable fee. It would shatter Liverpool's previous transfer record which stood at £75m.

However, when you are trying to sign potentially one of the best players in the world, you have to go big or go home.

There is a way, Hughes can offer Leverkusen an almost dream scenario in which Liverpool don't have to pay the £125m fee in full.

At the moment, Leverkusen look like they are not only going to be losing Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool but Jonathan Tah is expected to join Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

With Wirtz also potentially leaving, not to mention Xabi Alonso joining Real Madrid, Leverkusen will have a lot of players who will need to be replaced.

But here is where Liverpool can help. The club already has a ready-made Tah replacement for Leverkusen in Jarell Quansah, who is already attracting interest from German sides according to Florian Plettenberg.

Quansah is 22-years-old, he's an exciting young prospect who could flourish at Leverkusen.

At Liverpool right now he's just not getting the minutes he deserves because he's got the best centre-back in the world in front of him in the pecking order.

But for Leverkusen, Quansah has shown already this season he's an elite defender, who very much has the ability to play at a top level.

Offering him as part of a package to sign Florian Wirtz is a necessary sacrifice. It's one that could see Hughes significantly cut down the asking price for Wirtz, and it's not the only player the Liverpool sporting director could include in the package.

If Leverkusen are looking to replace Wirtz, Liverpool's very own Harvey Elliott could easily become an option for the Reds.

Elliott is young and while he's not quite the right fit for Liverpool, he's still a very talented player who has averaged 0.88 goal contributions per 90 this season.

Liverpool value Elliott at £40m, meanwhile Quansah is valued at around £30m. The chances are paying £55m plus the two of them is not going to be enough. But if Liverpool pay around £70m while also offering Elliott and Quansah as part of the package, that might prove to be satisfactory.

At the end of the day, it would mean Leverkusen get two very highly rated prospects while offering up one of their own and £70m in the bank as well to spend on more players in order to bolster their squad.

That's a dream offer, and one that is not going to be unmatched by anyone else. Which is why Leverkusen could simply not afford to refuse it.
