Plans changed: Liverpool hold TALKS with superstar winger
Liverpool have reportedly held talks with a Premier League winger. Their January transfer plans have now changed.
Liverpool have reportedly held initial talks about a transfer for Antoine Semenyo. The Bournemouth star is at the forefront of the transfer reports heading into January as several top Premier League clubs look to sign him.
That’s largely because Semenyo has a £65m release clause sitting in his contract. The likes of Liverpool can snap him up with minimal fuss if they believe he’s worth the money.
Certainly Semenyo’s early-season performances suggested he is. His form has dropped off a bit but there’s no question that he showed exactly how high the potential is with his start to the campaign.
The interest in him was already there from many - that only exacerbated it.
Teamtalk claim Liverpool have held initial talks about making a transfer happen. However, they’ve also changed their plans.
Liverpool’s change of plans
The Teamtalk report also claims that Liverpool, despite those talks, are now backing away from a move for Semenyo. That’s a bit of a shock after the series of reports we’ve seen over the last months.
However, it does make some sense. It’s entirely possible that Liverpool have pivoted away from signing a winger in the wake of Alexander Isak’s injury. Suddenly they’re short of strikers and spending big on a backup for the rest of the season and a winger seems unlikely.
But Liverpool may have moved on even before that. Their switch to a more narrow formation in recent weeks doesn’t leave as much room for a winger like Semenyo and almost certainly limits their desire to spend big on one mid-season.
So it’ll be interesting to see where they go from here. The interest in Semenyo seems very real but is the timing all wrong?
