OUTSTANDING new midfielder is coming to inspire Liverpool

Liverpool are on a run of two consecutive defeats - with Arne Slot seeking solutions to the team’s current malaise.

Despite spending £450m on the squad over the summer, the Reds’ head coach has not seen an immediate improvement in the ranks.

The Premier League title winners right now look a long way short of their best - with individual errors and inefficiencies affecting almost every sector of the team’s play.

The likes of Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Dominik Szoboszlai and Hugo Ekitike are hitting their marks but elsewhere the Anfield club are being plagued by inconsistency.

Liverpool's current issues in midfield

Midfield is beginning to look like an issue - with gaping holes appearing in the central third as opposition teams seek to break on the Reds’ defence.

Witness the performance against Galatasaray on Tuesday night for just a few examples of how Liverpool can be cut through with only one pass.

This is a different Liverpool this season - with Szoboszlai being shunted to right-back for a couple of reasons.

One, he is the closest thing Slot has to replicate the passing capabilities of Trent Alexander-Arnold in that position and he’s also been moved to accommodate Florian Wirtz at No10.

But this has created a knock-on effect in the Merseysiders’ midfield that cannot easily be solved. Add in the poor form of Alexis Mac Allister and you can see why the central sector is malfunctioning.

Time for Nyoni to step up

There is no chance of Liverpool rectifying this issue in the transfer market until January at least and even then it’s unlikely that Richard Hughes will spend big.

If there is to be a reinvigorating factor in midfield it’s going to have to be an in-house solution. And the recent form of Trey Nyoni could mean the England under-19 international is again worth a considerable look.

Nyoni, 18, signed his first professional contract earlier this year and is now seen as a fully-fledged member of the first team - sitting on the bench for two Premier League fixtures this season.

Nyoni outstanding for U19s

Slot has used the midfielder to bulk out the squad but he has yet to demonstrate he’s got faith in him to play big games in the Premier League and Champions League.

Sure, Nyoni is inexperienced but Slot has been rewarded for his bravery in adding Rio Ngumoha to the mix. Giving him more starts - like he did against Southampton in the EFL Cup last week - can only be a good thing in the short and long term.

A tall, rangy No8, Nyoni possesses a rare composure on the ball and, as seen in the recent UEFA Youth League victory against Galatasaray, he is capable of finding a forward pass.

It was Nyoni who provided the assist for Kareem Ahmed to get the Reds going in their 2-0 victory. Nyoni showed on the day he is quite simply head and shoulders above this level.

Described as “outstanding” by manager Rob Page, Nyoni took the captain’s armband and appeared as a man playing in a boys’ game.

He may well be the midfield all-rounder Slot requires to spark life into the season.
