No way! Strong belief star will agree momentous Liverpool deal
There is now a strong belief that one star will agree a massive Liverpool deal.
Richard Hughes' most impossible task at Anfield is still ahead of him.
Replacing Virgil van Dijk won't just be difficult, it's fundamentally an impossible job.
When the times comes, Liverpool wouldn’t simply be losing the best centre-back in the world; they would be losing the defensive foundation upon which their entire modern success has been built.
Van Dijk’s influence goes far beyond his physical and technical qualities, though those alone set him apart. His aerial dominance, positioning, and composure allow Liverpool to play a high defensive line with confidence.
He's so good at anticipating the attacker's next move and control the space ahead of him. Few defenders in football history combine such authority with such consistency. Attackers absolutely dread facing him.
What truly elevates him, however, is his leadership. Van Dijk organises the entire defensive structure, constantly communicating, adjusting, and ensuring cohesion across the back line.
His presence raises the performance level of those around him - players look calmer, more assured, and more disciplined simply because he is there. It's why young players have often thrived alongside him.
The one who is most notable to have benefitted from Van Dijk's influence has been Ibrahima Konate.
Over the course of the last few years, they've become a formidable duo in the Premier League. Especially last season, when Liverpool's defence were impenetrable as Konate and Van Dijk combined their brilliant qualities into a cohesive and insurmountable wall.
The Frenchman for a long time has felt like the ideal leader to succeed Van Dijk at the back. Konate is up there among the best defenders in the world.
He's been at Liverpool for a long time now, has plenty of experience at the highest levels and it just makes sense for him to take over once Van Dijk leaves.
But for a long time it has felt like Konate doesn't want to do that. He has been dithering on a contract extension with the club for well over a year now.
Currently, he has just a few months left until his deal expires and he will be free to leave on a free contract.
For a few months now, we've assumed he would just end up at Real Madrid - just like Trent Alexander-Arnold. But it looks like the tide could be turning.
In what could be a massive surprise, Konate could actually end-up staying put at Liverpool.
The Athletic reports that there is a growing belief that Konate could stay and agree a momentous deal for him and the club.
In their recent article they refer to club sources close to the dressing room, who have stated that they believe Konate is more likely to stay than to leave the club.
This would be massive news for the club. Konate could cement his leadership status, and in return Liverpool would have their ready made Van Dijk replacement secured in terms of experience at the back.
If those reports end-up being true, it will also save Richard Hughes a lot of time and money in the transfer market, trying to replace Konate.
