Name of Liverpool's 'major' signing comes to light
Liverpool reportedly want to sign a 'major' player. Now we may know his name.
Football Insider reported recently that Liverpool are chasing a 'major' signing at centre-back. The Reds want to strengthen the position as it goes through some serious change.
Ibrahima Konate's contract will expire and it feels as though he won't be signing a new one at this point. 18 months of talks is rarely a positive sign when there's so little reporting that he'll stay.
Joe Gomez, too, will likely depart. Liverpool's longest-serving player is heading into the final year of his own deal.
Virgil van Dijk will turn 35, necessitating a new signing who can fill the void when he's gone. Van Dijk will be in the final year of his deal, too. It'll surely be his last one.
Giovanni Leoni and the incoming Jeremy Jacquet are unlikely to be ready for that level of play. Liverpool need a player in his prime years - hence the 'major' target.
Pierre Kalulu could be him
So it's interesting that Gazzetta Dello Sport reports that Liverpool 'will try' to sign Pierre Kalulu from Juventus this summer. The Frenchman has had a bit of a breakout season in Turin, shining as one of their better players.
Kalulu has played four different roles across the campaign. That's a result of Juve moving from a back three to a back four and it showcases the kind of versatility Liverpool will want.
After all, Gomez has covered right-back and centre-back for years now. Any new signing should be able to offer similar.
It looks as though Kalulu is the defender Liverpool want to sign. Assuming the reporting is accurate, of course, but he does fit the bill.
It's absolutely one to watch for the summer as the Reds continue their major rebuild. And there may not be any bigger signing that what happens at the heart of their defence.
