Mo Salah's new contract SAVED Richard Hughes' job
People are now questioning the decision to give Mo Salah a new contract back in April. That move saved Richard Hughes from an unbelievably toxic situation.
Liverpool are in a crisis - it’s fair to say that now. Their form has been absolutely abysmal and we haven’t exactly seen many signs that it’ll turn around anytime soon.
Now Mo Salah has decided to air his personal grievances, too. He stepped in front of reporters on Saturday evening and spoke his mind, claiming the club had broken promises to him.
Most concerningly, he stated that his relationship with Arne Slot has disappeared. It was there last season, now it’s gone.
That interview was the result of Salah being dropped from the starting XI for three consecutive matches. In fact, he didn’t even get onto the pitch for two of them.
And that is the result of Liverpool’s form being incredibly poor and Salah struggling to find his own form all season. There was a sense that he’s regressed, which in turn questions whether he should have been given that new contract back in April.
But quite honestly, that new contract has saved jobs.
Mo Salah's new contract
Given recent performances, no one can really claim that Salah is the problem in the team. Despite the fact that the player himself feels he's being scapegoated.
But Liverpool dropped him only to put on poor performances against West Ham United, Sunderland and Leeds United - the latter two finishing with draws against newly-promoted sides. Salah is not the problem and no one is performing.
In fact, Liverpool's poor form actually goes all the way back to around February. They've won fewer than half of their games since the end of January so to put it bluntly, this run of atrocious results happens whether Salah is in the team or not.
Which brings us back around to that contract. If Liverpool hadn't given him that deal, the situation would be unbearably toxic for everyone, particularly sporting director Richard Hughes.
Because in that scenario, Salah leaves despite fans believing he should get a new deal. Their final memory of the Egyptian would have been him lifting the Premier League title while winning the Golden Boot, the Playmaker Award and the PFA Player of the Year award.
It would have looked like an absolutely disastrous decision and one we're not sure people could come back from. Because again, Salah not being at Liverpool would not have brought better form this season.
And that's also something worth remembering as we head into January. Selling the Egyptian will bring in money but it will not correct this form.
Something bigger must happen to bring that.
