Michael Edwards fears for Liverpool after major collapse
Michael Edwards fears for Liverpool, it seems. It comes after a major collapse with FSG.
FSG’s grand plan for a multi-club project built around Liverpool is dead, it seems. The Athletic reported as much on Friday and now there are some massive questions surrounding those at the club.
Principally, that means Michael Edwards. Edwards returned to the fold in 2024 to lead the multi-club project - after all, he didn’t rejoin Liverpool but instead become CEO of Football at FSG.
But attempts to find the ‘right’ club for the Reds’ ownership have failed. They’ve been presented with plenty but ultimately pulled out of every possibility.
So what now for Edwards? That’s unclear. His main reason for being involved with FSG and LFC is done with, for now at least, and he only has a year left on his contract.
But more than that, what does it mean for Liverpool?
Liverpool's big trouble
There's a reason why FSG initially pursued the multi-club idea. There's also a reason why Edwards was keen to return to the fold in order to front it.
"Edwards has long since viewed it as crucial to ensure Liverpool can compete for young talent on a level playing field," is the line in the Athletic's piece.
It's an important one as the battle for young talent has never been fiercer. Chelsea and Manchester City lead the way in that regard, having long had other clubs to farm talent out to.
That's an idea we will likely see more and more clubs pursue. Liverpool, though, can essentially only sign youth players who are heading straight for the first team or are happy to spend time at youth level.
That limits them - there's no question there. Of course, that's how football should work but the concept of a club signing a player in order to hold them for a 'bigger' club to reap the reward from is becoming more prevalent.
And so the collapse of FSG's multi-club project forces Liverpool into a disadvantage when it comes to building teams going forward for the long-term. Others will have an advantage and that could ultimately hit the Reds where it hurts.
