Mass exodus on the way, Liverpool defender now agrees departure
A Liverpool defender is going to be leaving the club.
Even after securing the signing of Jeremy Jacquet, Liverpool’s need for another centre-back remains.
Largely because of the contractual uncertainty surrounding key defenders. The most immediate concern is Ibrahima Konate, whose deal is expiring at the end of the season.
Konate is likely to leave the club at this stage. Although hope remains until the final day there is a sense this could be a Trent 2.0 situation, which would increase the need for Liverpool to add more bodies on top of Jacquet.
Beyond Konate, there are other issues to consider.
Both Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are contracted until 2027. While that may seem distant, top clubs plan their defensive succession years in advance.
Van Dijk, in particular, cannot be expected to anchor the back line indefinitely, and relying on multiple defenders entering the final two years of their contracts at the same time creates risk.
Liverpool are building for the future, Jacquet is just one piece of the puzzle.
The Reds also brought in Giovanni Leoni, and Ifeanyi Ndukwe is set to join the Reds as well. Meanwhile, Mor Talla Ndiaye joined Liverpool from Senegal in January and has already started to feature for the club's U20 side.
All of these centre-backs are 20-years-old or younger. Jacquet is the oldest, followed by Leoni, then Ndiaye and Ndukwe.
Liverpool will need experience alongside them to guide them along their journeys at Anfield. However, what is clear is that they all have world-class potential.
The Reds brought them in because they recognise just how good they can be.
One defender though who will not be part of Liverpool's project is an exciting England youth international who has agreed to leave the club.
LFC Next Gen on Instagram confirmed that Shadrach Ekiugbo is set to leave the club this summer.
The 16-year-old defensive sensation has been capped by England at U15 and U16 level and he has been with the club since U9 level but it looks like he will be moving on.
Preparations are already underway for the next stage of his career, and he will likely not be short of suitors given his exciting potential and the fact that he is one of the most talented young defenders in England.
The fact that Liverpool are letting him go upon the expiry of his contract is a massive surprise. But obviously, the club are well stocked in terms of young defenders.
And there is a possibility that Dara Jikiemi could also join Liverpool from Celtic, who is in the same age group as Ekiugbo, so it looks like Liverpool are already preparing for the England youth international's replacement as well.
