Manager admits Liverpool forward is COMING back
Liverpool made extensive use of the loan market last summer - completing deals for several of their fringe and young players.
Right now however some of those temporary spells are not going to plan. Harvey Elliott - for example - has been frozen out at Aston Villa amid reports he could return to Anfield in January.
And Ajax pair James McConnell and Vitezslav Jaros have been struggling since John Heitinga was sacked.
Kostas Tsimikas meanwhile hasn’t been enjoying life at Roma with a lack of first-team football coming the way of the Greek left-back.
Owen Beck was sent out to Derby County with the Welshman determined to deliver on his considerable potential - but the defender’s loan spell has already been cut short owing to injury.
Lewis Koumas set for Liverpool return
Now another problem is emerging for Liverpool’s loan department amid suggestions that another player could be heading back to base before the end of the season.
Lewis Koumas, 20, joined ambitious Championship side Birmingham City over the summer following a decent spell on loan at Stoke City last season.
The Wales international forward has been involved plenty for Chris Davies’ side - but has only made four starts.
Accordingly the Blues' manager admits that Liverpool may well be unhappy with the current scenario and could seek to return Koumas from his loan ahead of schedule.
Liverpool want to see Koumas develop and improve
“We brought Lewis here to help Birmingham City win games of football because that’s our number one objective but we also knew that we brought a player in that’s a Liverpool player that they wanted to see develop and improve,” he said according to the Birmingham Mail.
“I always say if you’re not playing, I hope you’re getting as much development as you can in terms of training, meetings and coaching, but they all want the game time so if it comes to a point with Lewis, as an example, where he’s not feeling he’s getting the game time, or Liverpool feel he’s not, or we come to a situation, then we would look at it.”
Although the Wales international has played - and scored for the Liverpool first team - it’s unlikely he could force his way back into Arne Slot’s reckoning if he were to return to Anfield.
More likely, the attacker would be fixed up with another loan deal in the Championship in order to get the right amount of game time under his belt.
