Liverpool have a shortlist to replace Andy Robertson.

It looks like the Scotsman is going to be leaving Anfield for pastures new. Unfortunately, the Reds could not tie him down to a new deal.

With his contract expiring in the summer from a business point of view, it makes sense to sell him to Tottenham right now.

However, when it comes to the squad and what's best for the balance of the team and the dressing room, it's a mystifying decision.

Liverpool are already short of options at the back. Sure, Kostas Tsimikas will return from his loan spell but he's not better than Robertson.

It will mean Liverpool getting weaker. Especially, because unlike Robertson, Tsimikas cannot play as a centre-back. Neither is the Greek international a long-term option at Anfield.

Long-term Richard Hughes is going to have to enter the transfer market and sign a replacement for the Scotsman.

So, who could this shortlist include?

Liverpool will be looking to sign a player who can provide depth and a back-up role behind Milos Kerkez. The Hungarian will be the club's first-choice option.

One of the options Liverpool will take a look at is Marco Palestra. He was already on the club's radar last summer and he has only gone and improved his performances in the Serie A this season.

The 20-year-old is a right-back but he has played as a left-back on numerous occasions and he is equally comfortable with his left and right foot.

Considering Liverpool need a right-back and a left-back, Palestra could be a smart move because you get a two-in-one deal with him.

Another option Liverpool will consider because he has a similar profile is Neco Williams.

He has played as a left-back for Nottingham Forest but actually started out his career as a right-back. Williams has gone under the radar with his performances and he could be another two-in-one deal. Best of all, he is homegrown, and club trained which is an area where Liverpool are lacking in their current squad.

Elsewhere, another player Liverpool have heavily scouted this season is Honest Ahanor. He's only 17-years-old but he is already playing regularly for Atalanta in the Serie A and the Champions League.

What's intriguing about Ahanor is that he can play as a left-back and as a centre-back as well. So, you could potentially be bringing in cover for two positions.

He's also extremely young with a high ceiling and plenty of time to improve and develop his game.

Now on the other hand, if Liverpool want to bring in a very similar profile to Kerkez, Lorient defender Arsene Kouassi. He's a 21-year-old left-back who has excelled in Ligue 1 this season.

Like Kerkez, he loves to bomb forward and is excellent in one vs one situations.

Kouassi could be an excellent option and may not cost as much as other potential targets.
