However, it’s not always possible for academy players to continue on their journey at Liverpool. The time soon comes for a decision to be made in the best interests of the youngster’s own personal development.
Barrett-Underwood leaves Liverpool
Leaving Liverpool was a choice first taken by Keehan Barrett-Underwood towards the back end of 2024. The United States under-17 international opted to cut ties with the Reds having featured for the club at U16 level.
The defender joined Leicester City U18s on trial - playing for the Foxes in November - before later penning a goodbye note to Liverpool.
“Thank you so much Liverpool for all the great memories I have made along the way and thank you to all my teammates for helping me on my journey,” the 2008-born star wrote on Instagram.
“I have loved watching everyone develop and helping me develop as a player I will miss all of you guys but it is time for me to develop on a different journey but I hope you all keep developing and strive for the best in the future.
“I’ve decided to leave as I need to develop on a different path but hopefully we will see each other again.”
Sheffield United announce Barrett-Underwood deal
The right-back subsequently moved to Sheffield United for the remainder of the 2024/25 season with the club now confirming that Barrett-Underwood is among the scholarship intake ahead of the new campaign.
“Ten players have put pen to paper on scholarships at the club ahead of the 2025/26 Professional Development League season,” a statement on the club’s website read.
