Liverpool unearth £4m Alexander-Arnold regen
Liverpool were outplayed, once again, when Crystal Palace visited Anfield on Wednesday night.
It's the third time the Eagles have beaten the Reds, with one victory at home, one away and one at Wembley for the Community Shield. It's genuinely sickening every time we're having to play them.
And when you factor in the failed transfer of Marc Guehi from the summer, it's clear that Liverpool are destined to be on the back-foot in the rivalry with Oliver Glasner's players. The 3-0 loss in the Carabao Cup was the club's six loss in our last seven matches. The only slight relief is that Palace won't be playing us again until April, unless the FA Cup has a treat in store for us in 2026.
In amongst the disastrous performance from the less-experienced side that Arne Slot put out was a performance from a full-back whom Liverpool fans won't have seen for a while. He was excellent.
Liverpool have a TAA regen
Trent Alexander-Arnold was a once in a generation player, capable of pulling off masterful passes and impacting a game like no-one else. His departure to Real Madrid has had a massive impact on us.
Not least because of the shift in style that Slot has had to make, bringing in a player like Florian Wirtz to create chances in central areas, since we no longer have that ability from our right-back anymore.
Of course, players like Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley are capable of making an impact, although it's nothing like how Trent was, and with Wirtz left at home against Palace, a new star was charged with helping to progress the ball forwards. In one specific long-ball he made, Calvin Ramsay gave us a nostalgic glimpse of what Trent used to do, week-in-week-out. It was mesmerising.
The 22-year-old Scot arrived on Merseyside in 2022 for just £4m from Aberdeen, and he hadn't featured for Liverpool's senior team since that season, when he played 13 minutes in the Champions League and 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup. Ever since, the club has sent him out on countless loan moves, giving him regular minutes at Preston North End, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock.
Alongside the special pass he made, Ramsay's overall performance was one of the few positives the Reds had, winning six of his eight duels, and making four clearances and seven recoveries. So long as he can keep his fitness up, you wouldn't expect him to playing for the under-21s for much longer.
Whenever one of Frimpong or Bradley have been injured this season, Dominik Szoboszlai has had to move from his preferred position in midfield. Ramsay would be able to solve that issue straight away.
But it shouldn't be overlooked how impressive the Scot's performance was. Given the Reds have struggled with their full-backs throughout this season, it might actually be plausible that Ramsay is preferred in certain games, so long as he's backed by Slot and given regular minutes to stay fresh.
His contract at Liverpool doesn't expire until 2027, so there's more than enough scope for him to lay down a marker on the back of this game, although it depends if he's afforded more opportunities.
As mentioned earlier, there were few positives fans could taken from Wednesday's encounter. If the Reds want to take some positivity into the game against Aston Villa on the weekend, Ramsay is it.
