Liverpool transfer timeline set as 'outstanding' ace speaks out

Liverpool have spent a lot of money on new players over the last year or so.

However, it feels like there are still some cracks showing at Anfield with a lot of their recent performances being far from ideal.

The Reds' defence has been one of their main problems due to the injuries suffered by Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni with the recent absence of Ibrahima Konate also hindering the club.

Of course, Arne Slot can only work with what he has available to him, but, now that Joe Gomez could be side-lined for an extended period after the injury he suffered against Bournemouth on Saturday, the Reds could be heading towards some troubling times.

With this in mind, it's hardly a surprise to see the Reds being linked with a new defender almost every day.

Nico Schlotterbeck sets deadline to decide on his future amid Liverpool interest

It's likely that most Liverpool fans expected Marc Guehi to become their new centre-back in the upcoming summer transfer window.

However, since Manchester City lost both Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol to long-term injuries, they jumped on the deal and managed to get it over line.

On paper, this transfer seems like it was the worst thing that could have happened to Liverpool, but, in reality, it could've just directed their attention towards signing an even better player than the Englishman.

That is, as per a fresh update from Sky Germany journalist Patrick Berger.

Taking to his personal X account, Berger shared that Nico Schlotterbeck, who has recently been linked with an Anfield switch, has set himself a deadline to decide what he wants to do with his future.

"I've set a personal deadline for myself. I won't say when it is, though," he said.

"Definitely before summer, though. I feel comfortable here. It won't be an easy decision.

"I'm a gut-feeling kind of guy. I'll sit down with Dad and Keven and then make a decision. I don't quite know right now how it'll turn out."

Nico Schlotterbeck is the ideal defensive target for Liverpool

One thing that has been made abundantly clear this season is that Liverpool need to add some more defenders to their ranks.

Indeed, the Reds do have the likes of Calvin Ramsay and Rhys Williams among their ranks if they're needed, but, with how stubborn Slot is about his team selection, it feels highly unlikely that he'd trust either of them to play a game for Liverpool.

Although Schlotterbeck's contract isn't set to expire until next summer, the fact that he's now 26 years old will mean that his next contract will take him through the prime years of his career.

And, even though he's adored by Borussia Dortmund's fanbase, if the option of moving to a massive club such as Liverpool is on the table, it's not really an opportunity that he can turn down.

In Liverpool's eyes, the German centre-back has had plenty of Champions League experience and the fact that he can be used as a centre-back or a left back is a massive bonus, especially since he's been called an "outstanding" player by Julian Naglesmann.

And, since his contract is set to expire next term, Slot and Richard Hughes could potentially agree a cut-rate deal to bring the German to L4, which would be a magnificent piece of business.

Of course, there's no knowing what the future has in store but for now, it feels like a move to Liverpool could be on the cards in the near future.
