Xabi Alonso asks Real Madrid to consider BOMBSHELL deal for Florian Wirtz
It’s not been the easiest of starts to the season for Liverpool superstar Florian Wirtz.
Signed by sporting director Richard Hughes for a fee that could reach £116m, the German playmaker was the most expensive player in British football history until the Reds acquired Alexander Isak for £125m on transfer deadline day.
But Wirtz is yet to post a goal or an assist for his new club as his adaptation period continues - leading to widespread criticism in the media.
Jamie Carragher and Wayne Rooney are just two of the high-profile names to query Arne Slot’s usage of the former Bayer Leverkusen star - suggesting he needs to be taken out of the team.
Wirtz was excellent under Xabi Alonso
No doubt the 22-year-old will prove to be a superb signing in time - but right now the Germany international can be said to be going through it.
And now a fanciful idea seems to be manifesting in Madrid. Wirtz was a German league and cup double-winner for B04 back in 2023/24 - going unbeaten for the entire season.
He did so under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso - who unlocked the German talent throughout the successful campaign.
Xabi Alonso wants Madrid to consider Wirtz deal
And now Defensa Central is claiming that the new Real Madrid head coach as instructed club bosses to keep an eye on Wirtz’s situation in case things don’t improve by next summer.
“These criticisms have led Xabi Alonso, aware of the need to sign a midfielder, to ask Real Madrid to keep a close eye on Florian Wirtz's situation for next year, in case the player's adaptation doesn't end up being optimal and a move to the club could be considered next summer,” the report reads.
No way will Liverpool give up on Wirtz
Liverpool beat out competition from Madrid - and Manchester City - to land Wirtz last summer. That evidenced the pulling power of the Premier League champions - with Arne Slot’s vision for Wirtz winning out.
It would be a rash decision in the extreme to abandon the Wirtz experiment at the first hurdle - so we’d expect this transfer report to go nowhere.
Wirtz is under contract with Liverpool until 2030 - and looks set to be the centrepiece of Slot’s attack in the seasons ahead.
