Clearest sign yet that new midfielder is coming to Liverpool
Liverpool are set for a major midfield reconstruction this coming summer.
The Reds have been relying on the same core of senior midfield players for the last couple of campaigns.
But the strain is beginning to tell on certain members of the group - with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in particular not reaching the same consistent heights since winning the 2024/25 Premier League.
Factor in the ongoing uncertainty over Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo and you can see why Richard Hughes may be tempted to test the market for a new arrival.
Jones, 25, is entering the final year of his contract and would bank the club plenty of “pure profit” if he is offloaded in summer 2026.
Endo meanwhile is working on getting back to full fitness for the FIFA World Cup but he too could be sacrificed in summer in order to register a transfer fee.
Nyoni to be loaned out
And we have been given the clearest indication yet that a new midfielder could be coming into the club in a report in the Athletic.
Because it suggests that Trey Nyoni is the most likely young player to be loaned out by Richard Hughes and Arne Slot for next season.
“Nyoni is seen as the most likely to be loaned out,” the report reads.
With Jones and Endo potentially leaving - it would leave Slot with just THREE senior midfielders including Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
You would expect Nyoni, 19, to fill out one of the senior squad roles next season in order to prevent the club from being short in the position.
Reds must sign new midfielder if Nyoni goes
But if the rangy No8 is going to leave on loan it would likely open a gap in the squad for a new arrival.
We could see Elliot Anderson or Adam Wharton arrive - with both players boasting that precious homegrown status.
And more outlandishly a bid could go in for Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid - who looks set to be sold following the emergence of Thiago Pitarch.
Slot hasn’t given many opportunities to Nyoni this season in the Premier League and he may well have to build regular senior rhythm away from Anfield. But amid all the uncertainty it means that a new midfielder is bound to come in.
