Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold experienced some uncomfortable moments during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Arsenal.

The 26-year-old hometown player was given a flavour of fan dissatisfaction following his announcement that he intended to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Trent was soundly booed inside Anfield upon replacing Conor Bradley at right-back, with a high-profile deal with Real Madrid lined up.

It appears this move has been in the works for a long time. Alexander-Arnold last renewed his contract with Liverpool back in 2021 - inking a four-year extension which takes him to this summer.

Liverpool are reported to have called off contract talks back in March when it became apparent Alexander-Arnold had no intention of sticking around.

Real want Trent for CWC

Originally conceived as a free transfer, Real would like to bring the deal forward. That’s because they are among the competing teams in the forthcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

Since Trent’s Liverpool contract expires on June 30, he would be unavailable for Madrid for the beginning of the tournament if he moves on a free transfer.

Instead, the Spanish capital club want to effectively “buy” Alexander-Arnold for a nominal fee during the pre-tournament transfer window.

It would bring an end to Trent’s Liverpool career a month early and give Real the added boost of a world-class right back for the games. But first Liverpool would have to agree to talk to Madrid over the deal.

A deal for Trent 'fully expected'

And following the hostile reception Trent got at the weekend, the latest reports are that the Reds will bundle him out of the door - permitting him to play in the Club World Cup for Madrid.

That’s according to the latest report in Football Insider, which claims a deal between the two clubs is close.

“Liverpool are fully expected to agree a deal with Real Madrid over an early exit for Trent Alexander-Arnold,” a report states.

“It is believed Real Madrid are keen to do a deal, while Liverpool are ready to receive a quick fee with the right-back’s exit already confirmed.”

Plans are afoot for the English champions to sign a replacement. Aside from Bradley, who looks more than capable of starring in the right-back role, Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen is now being lined up.

Although more of a wing-back or right winger, title-winning Frimpong has got class, experience and quality which will be very useful for Arne Slot as he sets about a new gameplan for the Reds.
