Liverpool have found a NEW Thiago and he will cost €130m
Liverpool declined to make any additions to their midfield during the summer transfer window.
Indeed the club’s options were instead depleted - with sporting director Richard Hughes sanctioning outgoing deals for Harvey Elliott and James McConnell on loan as well as a permanent departure for Tyler Morton.
The strain is now beginning to tell on the Reds’ current crop of midfielders - with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo all suffering injuries already this season.
Dominik Szoboszlai, the other member of the midfield quintet, has been used to put out fires all over the pitch for head coach Arne Slot.
He has featured at right-back, defensive midfield, attacking midfield and No10 for the Reds as Slot desperately tries for a solution in the middle third.
Vitinha can be new Thiago
Perhaps one area where Liverpool are struggling is through a lack of creativity in central midfield. Arguably the club have been without a playmaking midfielder since the retirement of Thiago Alcantara in 2024.
But now according to a report in Caught Offside the Premier League club have identified a NEW Thiago.
Vitinha, 25, has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the world since joining Paris Saint-Germain from Porto back in 2022.
The Portugal international finished on the Ballon d’Or podium earlier this year following a treble-winning campaign with PSG and a UEFA Nations League victory for Roberto Martinez’s side.
Under contract until 2029, it is believed that a bid of €130m would bring the French champions to the table - although he is very much a fixture of Luis Enrique’s lineup.
Liverpool keeping a close eye on Vitinha
“Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Paris Saint-Germain’s Portuguese midfielder Vitinha ahead of the January transfer window, a report reads.
“The Portugal international midfielder is known for his composure under pressure, press resistance, and intelligent distribution. Vitinha fits the kind of profile that Liverpool have sought since the departure of Thiago Alcântara.”
However Liverpool are not going to sanction a January deal for the former Wolves man unless a current midfielder is sold.
Will Liverpool be tempted to sell a midfielder?
Alexis Mac Allister, 26, is a subject of Real Madrid’s interest and is maybe closer than other midfieder to the exit in the event that Richard Hughes wants to raise money for a Vitinha bid.
Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai were outstanding in the 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign - but need to collectively get back to their best form in order to realign the Merseysiders’ season.
No doubt Vitinha would help the Reds from a creative perspective - a progressive passer with an eye for an assist, the 25-year-old could be just what Arne Slot is looking for in midfield.
