The falling dominoes which could see Real Madrid get deal for Ibrahima Konate
It's incredibly likely that Liverpool could be swept up into a transfer spiral this summer.
A lot of work went in the Reds' last major recruitment spend, with records being shattered by the activity, although it's now clear that certain positions may have been overlooked, in the process.
In order to rectify those mistakes, we could see another significant transfer window at the end of the season, with a midfielder, a centre-back and a winger, each potentially being looked at. However, as well as bringing some new faces in, the club will also navigate some of the inevitable outgoings.
With regard to Ibrahima Konate, for example, whose contract expires in June 2026, the Reds could see a number of dominoes fall across Europe, facilitating an opportunity for him to join Real Madrid.
Konate's potential move is complicated
Liverpool fans will all be aware of how concerning Konate's current situation is. Depending upon whether he delivered a positive of negative performance for the Reds, reports have been coming out from Spain, updating us on how likely it is that Real Madrid will look to sign him on a free transfer.
Given he's still only 26 years old and a first-team regular in the French national team, alongside the circumstances of his contract at Liverpool, it's unsurprising that the Spanish giants are interested.
The Reds have been trying to get him to pen a new deal for almost 12 months now, but none of the offers have proved tempting enough for him. While the details are unknown, it's to be expected that either Konate feels his worth isn't being reflected, or he simply isn't looking to stay at Liverpool.
Regardless, the cardinal sin of allowing him to enter into this season without a new deal has been committed and we're staring down the barrel of one of two scenarios unfolding. He could take the path that Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah recently took, in signing new contracts, or he may choose to follow Trent Alexander-Arnold and leave. Right now, no one knows that he's thinking.
If the second option is taken - and it must be said, that's the most likely of the two - then joining Real Madrid is not going to be as straightforward as you may think. A lot of dominoes has to fall in order to facilitate his wishes. In a new report, Sky Sport Germany took a look at the complex transfer spiral.
Favoured centre-backs David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger could each depart Los Blancos at the end of the season, if their contract situations aren't resolved. It is understood that the Austrian is unlikely to get a new deal, despite his wishes to extend, while the German's situation remains open.
You would expect one of the pair to leave if Konate is to have any chance of getting his move.
But then you need to consider how Liverpool might replace the Frenchman if he decides not to sign a new contract, because target Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace is said to be dreaming of a move to Real Madrid, although Bayern Munich and Barcelona are also interested in him. So while the Reds might have been confident in their chances of getting him last summer, this time will be far more difficult.
Meanwhile, another option for Liverpool to consider is Dayot Upamecano at Bayern, who is yet to agree a new deal, despite the German giants' best intentions. If he becomes available, Liverpool could replace one Frenchman with another. They're both highly-regarded, 26-year-old defenders.
As such, if Konate decides to take a gamble on his future by becoming a free agent, there is nothing to guarantee he'll join Real Madrid. The five potential free agents have created a world of uncertainty.
