Richard Hughes puts THREE forwards on shortlist to replace Mo Salah
One of Liverpool’s most pressing transfer priorities is sorting out a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.
Although the Egyptian King is under contract at Anfield until 2027, it looks increasingly likely that he will be leaving the club before then.
Salah, 33, burned his bridges with head coach Arne Slot last weekend when he stated his relationship with the Dutchman was non-existent following three consecutive matches on the bench.
The winger also suggested that certain individuals wanted him OUT of the club - leading to speculation that there will be a January departure on the cards.
Salah burns his bridges
In the meantime Salah flies out to Morocco to play in the Africa Cup of Nations for Egypt - but right now it’s unclear where he will be playing his club football when he is released from international duty.
Saudi Arabian super clubs are reported to be lining up to tempt Salah to the SPL while San Diego FC in MLS have got plans to add him to their 2026 roster.
And if Salah does leave then Liverpool will have a monumental gap to fill in their lineup. Salah has been top scorer every season since arriving from Roma back in 2017 - and has won all the major honours the club game has got to offer.
It will take a stupendous talent to succeed the No11 on the Liverpool right wing and we are led to believe that the search has been narrowed down to three names.
That’s according to a new report in Fichajes - which claims Antoine Semenyo, Rodrygo and Yankuba Minteh are now all under consideration by Liverpool recruiters.
Liverpool like Semenyo and Rodrygo
The links to Semenyo are not new - with the Ghana international well known to Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes. The 25-year-old signed a new contract over the summer but can leave Bournemouth if any team triggers a £65m release clause.
Capable of playing left or right, Semenyo has scored six Premier League goals this season and would be a welcome addition in the event that Salah leaves.
Rodrygo is a more complex case. Liverpool have tracked the 24-year-old for a long time now - desiring a deal for the Brazilian when he was leaving Santos back in 2019.
He opted for Real Madrid - winning two Champions League titles - but the time is right to leave for the versatile forward owing to a lack of opportunities under Xabi Alonso.
The winger could be available for around £75m and is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2028.
Minteh the best fit
Minteh meanwhile represents an investment for the future. The 21-year-old Gambian moved from Newcastle to Brighton in 2024 for around £30m - signing a five-year deal with the Seagulls.
He has got four assists in the Premier League this season and looks like he’s got all the tools to cope with a step-up to a higher level.
Crucially he’s got experience of working under Arne Slot - spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Feyenoord. He scored 10 Eredivisie goals and added five assists for the Dutchman in a stellar campaign.
Minteh right now looks like the best fit stylistically if Liverpool want to replicate their Salah success - otherwise they may need to change the way they play to accommodate Semenyo or Rodrygo.
