Would Liverpool have Trent Alexander-Arnold back?

It might be a question worth thinking about.

There are of course reasons why Liverpool should NOT consider this a deal worth doing. Firstly, the perception of Trent’s exit last summer still rankles with a lot of supporters.

Hopes were legitimately high that the right-back would be a one-club man, inherit the captain’s armband and lead his hometown club to an era of success.

Instead the defender wanted something different; the glamour of Real Madrid and the sizeable pay cheque to go along with it.

For many fans, it’s a non-starter.

Then there’s the money. Trent was making around £180k per week when he left Liverpool. His Real Madrid wages have been estimated at around £280 per week.

Perhaps a renewal last summer would have cost Liverpool that amount - given Trent’s output and importance to the team. There aren’t a lot of players making that much at Anfield - only Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah make more.

Liverpool have now got the highest wage bill in English football and another expensive contract would perhaps add to their worries.

But a return could be on the cards.

Trent is fed up of Real Madrid already

A report in Fichajes in Spain is now claiming that Alexander-Arnold is “unwilling” to remain at Real Madrid under his current conditions.

He has endured significant injury disruption since he moved to the Bernabeu and the coach in charge when he signed - Xabi Alonso - has now left too.

Perhaps the next permanent appointment following Alvaro Arbeloa’s departure might not fancy Trent and he could instead be a very expensive substitute.

It’s also reported that Trent’s Real Madrid dream is not exactly as it was first pitched.

Even when he has played he hasn’t looked like one of the most important players on the team - a central component. In fact he’s been an awkward fit; his defensive lapses all the more pronounced when teams counter-attack against Los Blancos.

The report in the Spanish media claims Trent would settle for Bayern Munich as his next destination and in fairness Vincent Kompany’s team could do with a specialist right-back to take their fortunes even higher.

But there could be a temptation for Richard Hughes to strike a deal.

Liverpool need Trent back

Let’s be honest and say that Jeremie Frimpong is not as good as Trent. He’s been better in recent weeks but he’s still not a right-back in any faithful sense of the word.

And Conor Bradley - given an expensive contract as Trent’s replacement - is continually suffering from injuries. He won’t play again until next season but even when he’s been in the team Bradley has looked off it.

Liverpool have been struggling to recreate Trent’s output from right-back and look a poorer team for his absence.

Maybe - just maybe - there is a possibility that he could be tempted home.

Bayern want Trent deal

That is of course if Madrid agree to a deal. Given he cost them peanuts - £10m for a player of his talent is an absolute steal - a compromise could be made on the fee.

With Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk both leaving in 2027 there could also be an opportunity to bring the wage bill down and make room in the budget for the salary Trent deserves.

This is not going to be a popular opinion at this moment in time for many reasons - but Trent misses Liverpool and Liverpool miss Trent.

Let’s do the right thing and end the exile or else a different team will benefit from his excellence.
