Richard Hughes gets green light for SENSATIONAL £75m Semenyo deal
Liverpool spent £450m upgrading their Premier League title-winning squad over the summer.
A lot of that money was put towards new attackers - with Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike among the headline arrivals.
Wirtz and Isak each broke the British transfer record - with the German costing £116m from Bayer Leverkusen and the Reds committing £125m for Isak.
Those are sizeable outlays but there are indications that Liverpool are still not done reconstructing their strikeline.
Although two top quality No9s have been sourced in the shape of Isak and Ekitike - the Anfield club could probably do with another winger or two.
Antoine Semenyo can play either side
Cody Gakpo saw off Luis Diaz to become first choice on the left and has Rio Ngumoha to contend with these days. But the Englishman is only 17 and it’s unknown how much football he will be entrusted to play this term.
On the other side, Mo Salah will be shadowed by Federico Chiesa and Jeremie Frimpong but at 33 the time will soon come to replace the Egyptian King.
And one player who could perhaps fulfil BOTH wing roles is Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.
Capable of lining up on the left wing or right wing, the Ghana international has perhaps been the best player in the Premier League this season.
Antoine Semenyo rated at £75m
The Cherries’ attacker has scored SIX goals in only seven outings - including two against Liverpool at Anfield on matchday one. The 25-year-old is a familiar face for one key Liverpool figure - sporting director Richard Hughes.
Hughes was technical director at Bournemouth when a deal was concluded with Bristol City for Semenyo for only £10m back in January 2023.
Having signed a new contract at Dean Court over the summer, it is expected Semenyo would go for many multiples of that sum these days with some reports suggesting the fee could be £75m.
Liverpool confident of Semenyo deal
And Liverpool will be right there for the versatile forward - with a report in TEAMtalk now suggesting that the Premier League champions are “confident” of getting a deal done.
“Liverpool’s recruitment team, led by former Bournemouth chief Richard Hughes, is confident of leveraging past ties to lure the forward to Anfield,” the report reads.
Hughes has already revisited Bournemouth for one signing since being installed as Liverpool sporting director - paying over £40m for Hungary left-back Milos Kerkez.
The signing of Semenyo - even at £75m - would make a lot of sense given Liverpool’s impending need for reinforcements on both sides of the attack.
