Liverpool should have their eyes on three stars relegated from the Premier League this season. It’s worked before, after all.

Liverpool will enter this summer with some grand plans. They’re looking for ways to improve on a title-winning team - something far from simple.

Quite a few players could leave this summer as a result, which means bringing quite a few players in. Liverpool won’t want to dramatically decrease their squad size, particularly after seeing certain players fade a little over the second half of the season.

But there is a nice way to add extra depth to a squad without spending fortunes. Liverpool have utilised it before, too: signing from relegated sides.

The Reds signed Gini Wijnaldum, Andy Robertson and Xherdan Shaqiri in back-to-back years when building their first great team under Jurgen Klopp. All arrived for fees well below their actual value and Liverpool benefitted massively.

We think they can make that happen again.

Bilal El Khannouss

Liverpool have tracked Bilal El Khannouss for a little while now. Anfield Watch understands the Reds looked into a deal last year but weren’t willing to match Leicester City’s offer at the time.

They’ve kept tabs on him, though, and may see an opportunity to snap El Khannouss up this summer. Leicester City’s relegation makes it incredibly possible that he moves on.

He’s certainly someone who ticks the right boxes, too. El Khannouss is a wonderfully creative player but also one who wins his tackles and presses hard.

The Moroccan averages over two tackles per 90 minutes - an extraordinary rate for an attacking player. Doing that at 20 while also showing good progressive passing will put you on everyone’s radar.

We think El Khannouss is perfectly placed as a rotation player with plenty of room to develop. One for Liverpool to rethink in 2025.

Tyler Dibling

Tyler Dibling is probably the most talked-about relegated player this year and with good reason. He’s been fantastic in his debut senior campaign, often looking like Southampton’s most talented player.

Add that fact he’s still only 19 and that he’s homegrown - now you might understand the Saints’ ridiculous asking price.

But clubs might actually pay enormous fees this summer to get Dibling. He’s that kind of talent, one who can run with the ball and force things to happen in games.

With Liverpool hoping to retool their attack, they’ve simply got to look into a deal here. Maybe Southampton price them out of a move but here’s a proper wonderkid and he’s available.

We’ll cross our fingers.

Mateus Fernandes

Mateus Fernandes only joined Southampton last year but it appears there’s little chance that he remains beyond 2025. Fabrizio Romano recently told Give Me Sport that there’s plenty of interest in the 20-year-old.

Hopefully, Liverpool are in that group. Fernandes has been one of the few highlights for Southampton, proving himself in the Premier League and almost certainly earning himself a long stay at the top level.

Data-wise, he’s exactly what Liverpool need to add depth to their midfield, too. Fernandes is a player who wins his tackles (around 2.8 per 90) as well as showing a desire to run with the ball.

He’s among the best midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for progressing the ball with carries and take-ons. Add in his versatility (Fernandes can play in midfield, attacking midfield, or even out wide) and you’ve got about as useful a squad player as you could hope for.

Fernandes is only going to improve, too. He’ll quickly becoming the ultimate development project for someone. We hope it’s Liverpool.
