It’s been a rough week for Liverpool. The Premier League champions suffered a sixth defeat in seven top-flight matches last weekend when Nottingham Forest left Anfield with a 3-0 victory.

But worse was to follow on Wednesday night. PSV scored four times against the hosts on Merseyside - condemning Arne Slot to another humiliating loss.

Liverpool have now lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions and if things don’t turn around soon then Slot could be seeking a new job.

One issue that needs to be solved in the short term is the form of Ibrahima Konate. The 26-year-old has been poor in recent matches - with Slot substituting him early in the Forest and PSV games.

Konate's contract uncertainty

The Frenchman had been at fault for chances - and opposition goals - leading the head coach to conclude that he had no choice but to use other options.

And in the background is Konate’s contract situation.

Having joined the Reds back in 2021 from RB Leipzig for around £35m, Konate’s current deal is due to expire in summer 2026. If no new deal is agreed then he will be free to leave at the end of the season.

According to a new report in TEAMtalk, Real Madrid are growing in confidence about signing the France international.

Madrid convinced that Konate will join

The 15-time European champions have been on Konate’s trail for a long time now and should be ready to strike a deal in January when he is available to speak to overseas clubs about a Bosman transfer.

That said, talks are continuing between Konate’s entourage and the club - with Richard Hughes and Co. remaining optimistic over the prospect of Konate staying.

“Real Madrid are increasingly convinced that Ibrahima Konate wants to join them – but Liverpool are happy with how their own situation has been progressing,” a report reads.

“Liverpool’s last round of talks are believed to have been promising, giving Liverpool their own hope over a fresh deal.”

Konate is reported to be earning £140k per week and previously it was suggested that it would take around £200k per week for a renewal.

Right now it must be said that Konate isn’t showing that kind of level and it remains to be seen what kind of offer Real Madrid put in front of him.
