Liverpool to lose centre-back after dramatic contract U-turn
Liverpool are in the middle of an extensive rebuild at centre-back.
The process was kicked off last summer when Richard Hughes swapped Giovanni Leoni for Jarell Quansah. And the Liverpool sporting director was active for deals once again in January - signing Noah Adekoya and Mor Talla Ndiaye.
Transfers were also put in place for the summer as both Jeremy Jacquet and Ifeanyi Ndukwe are due to arrive. Liverpool’s experienced options in the heart of defence are running of time - hence the extensive remodelling.
Ibrahima Konate is due to leave at the end of the current season when his contract ends while Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk see their terms expire in 2027.
The big risk with losing so many wise heads is a lack of top-level experience in their new, incoming options.
Liverpool want Schlotterbeck
Therefore a deal for a seasoned campaigner is necessary - in order to help young players settle and ideally take over from Van Dijk in time. One favoured candidate is Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck.
The 25-year-old Germany international is under contract with the Yellow and Blacks until 2027 and without an agreement for a new deal he could be sold.
Liverpool would be right there for his signature if a deal is to be done - valuing Schlotterbeck’s leadership, left-footedness and passing ability.
But a dramatic U-turn could now see him stay at the Westfalenstadion.
According to various reports in Germany a summit earlier this week between the defender and club higher-ups opened the door to a new contract.
Dortmund close to securing new deal
That in turn is due to frustrate suitors - a group of teams which includes Liverpool according to a report in Fussballdaten.
“The sticking points remain the exit clause and the new salary scale for Nico Schlotterbeck. Real Madrid, but also Liverpool FC, are said to be interested in the centre-back,” the report reads.
Dortmund were said to be looking for around £35m for Schlotterbeck on his current terms. And if a new deal is struck you can expect that sum to rise.
Right now the club’s chase for Schlotterbeck may well have hit a brick wall and other options now need to be considered.
