Richard Hughes don't go: You are key to £100m+ forward deal
This week has brought great speculation that Richard Hughes may be coming to the end of his tenure at Liverpool.
The sporting director was brought on board by Michael Edwards back in 2024 - playing a key role in hiring Premier League title-winning head coach Arne Slot.
The Scot is under contract until 2027 but reports have emerged linking Hughes with both Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.
And the FSG jury may well be out on Hughes’ spending of £450m last summer as several of the new arrivals are waiting to hit their marks on a consistent basis.
Factor in a very expensive renewal for Mohamed Salah and you can appreciate why question marks are being raised against the 46-year-old.
Hughes' is Liverpool trump card in Morgan Rogers deal
But Liverpool simply need to keep Hughes around for one more transfer window; the fate of an incredible nine-figure transfer deal could depend on it.
Aston Villa are likely to lose Morgan Rogers in summer if they fail to land Champions League football. The 23-year-old could be sacrificed to raise much-needed cash - upwards of £100m according to a report in talkSPORT.
Under contract until 2031 the England playmaker is very much on the transfer radar for the Premier League champions as well as Chelsea ahead of the window opening.
And the report mentions that Liverpool could hold a crucial card in any upcoming deal for Rogers.
Hughes has already completed deal for Rogers
Hughes - the former Bournemouth technical director - has got experience of signing Rogers once before. Way back in 2021/22 the little-known Rodgers was signed on loan by Hughes for the Cherries from parent club Manchester City.
Spotting the then-teenager’s talents Hughes’ acquisition featured 14 times in the Championship for the south coast club. And that pre-established relationship could emerge as key in any negotiations over Rogers’ role at Anfield.
A creative force Rogers is capable of playing in several different attacking positions – meaning Hughes and Slot would have increased, quality options at their disposal next season.
So let’s end the speculation over Hughes’ future and let him concentrate on what he does best - concluding record-breaking deals for the best talents around.
