Mo Salah is leaving Liverpool with a very difficult transfer decision

It’s fair to say Mohamed Salah hasn’t been having the best of seasons at Liverpool.

His goalscoring and assist numbers are well down on what he registered last term - when he carried off the Premier League’s player of the year, top scorer and playmaker award.

In late 2025 he was even dropped out of the lineup by Arne Slot - subsequently unleashing a tirade against his head coach and the club following a 3-3 draw at Leeds.

That was sufficient to see Salah demoted from the squad to face Inter in the Champions League. But before he jetted off to the Africa Cup of Nations relationships were patched up.

And since returning from Afcon - where he rediscovered some of his best form - Salah has been slowly returning to his Liverpool self.

Salah's form returning at the right time

He sometimes appears ill at ease in this Arne Slot system - too far from the box and isolated on the right wing. But 2026 has been a very good indicator that there is still plenty to offer from Salah - particularly when he gets stationed in and around the area.

He racked up his 254th goal for the Reds on Friday night against Wolves - having now scored more goals for the 20-time champions than any player has ever scored for Manchester United.

Salah’s got four goals and four assists in his last 10 games in all competitions - for a total of nine goals and eight assists (17 goal contributions overall) in 31 games.

That is not half bad; in fact it’s more than Bukayo Saka has managed for Arsenal this season in 38 matches.

Will Liverpool be tempted to sell Salah?

But it just goes to show how high Salah has set the bar over the last few seasons that this registers as a poor campaign by his standards.

It’s not perfect but it’s a start.

Salah is picking up form right as Liverpool need him in three competitions. The Premier League title is a distant dream - but there is still a Champions League place to play for.

Factor in the FA Cup and Champions League - two legitimate shots at a trophy - and you can see why this upturn in numbers should be welcomed.

Of course it remains to be seen what happens over the 33-year-old at the end of the season. It’s been speculated that he will be joining a team in MLS or else the Saudi Pro League as Richard Hughes considers alternative wide attackers.

The die may already be cast for Salah’s Liverpool future - but if not - these last few months of the season may help convince the sporting director that he’s worth keeping until the end of his contract in 2027.
