Liverpool have been linked with a transfer which could have a SEISMIC effect on the hierarchy of clubs in Europe.

The destinations have ordinarily been Real Madrid and Barcelona - as we’ve seen in the case of Trent Alexander-Arnold and previously with Luis Suarez, Javier Mascherano, Philippe Coutinho and Xabi Alonso.

To a lesser extent Manchester City have been a threat - completing a bitter deal for Raheem Sterling which still sticks in the craw of many Reds’ fans.

Michael Olise will be a game-changer

But things are changing.

Liverpool are riding the crest of a wave under Arne Slot - winning the Premier League title in 2024/25 and establishing themselves as THE destination for top overseas and English top-flight talent.

That status is best exemplified through the purchases of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak - two players in previous times may have deemed offers from Real Madrid or elsewhere as more attractive.

But Liverpool is the place to be right now - and the Reds are the most likely destination for another top talent next summer. And if Michael Olise moves from Bayern Munich to Anfield then it promises to shake up the top order of European football forever.

Bayern's make-or-break transfer

A report in Absolutfussball details Bayern’s predicament.

FC Hollywood have never seen themselves as a selling club. Instead, Bayern are supposed to be what Liverpool are now - a destination for the game’s elite talents.

But the lure of the Premier League is threatening to upend Bayern’s top-dog status and here the future of Olise is key.

Bayern haven’t traditionally sold well. Their most expensive departures are Matthijs de Ligt and Lucas Hernandez at €45m each. This maybe indicates that players peak at Bayern before moving elsewhere to wind down.

But Olise is going to be different.

Olise to Liverpool will confirm Bayern's status

And it could mean a change in the way Bayern operate in the transfer market.

A Bundesliga club - even Bayern - cannot compete with the riches on offer in the Premier League and even Saudi Arabia. So there is a crucial decision to be made.

Persist with keeping hold of their top talents - such as Olise - or else become another “selling club” and do business with the Reds for their star attraction.

That process could all start with Olise if a bid comes in that’s too good to turn down.

Bayern join the Bundesliga's lesser lights

Can Bayern afford NOT to become a selling club - surrendering their status as European superclub? They have always seen themselves as a cut above the likes of Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Frankfurt.

Those teams Bayern regularly poach players from and have established their reputations as selling clubs.

The Olise transfer is going to be a fascinating test case. Liverpool will overhaul Bayern in the European football hierarchy - relegating the German record champions to the second tier for good.
