Michael Edwards will FINALLY get his £75m transfer wish granted
Liverpool spent £450m on new players during last summer’s transfer window.
Among the incomings were several new attackers - including British-record deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.
Hugo Ekitike meanwhile was an eye-catching acquisition - as Richard Hughes and Arne Slot plotted an overhaul of the Premier League title-winners’ strikeline.
There remains a sense that further forward upgrades could well be added - either in January or next summer.
Rodrygo a long-term wish of Michael Edwards
We’ve seen extensive links to players like Michael Olise and Antoine Semenyo - as the Reds get to grips with the task of eventually replacing Mohamed Salah.
And the stars could well be aligning for FSG’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards to line up a move for a star he’s admired for a long time.
Rodrygo Goes, 24, swapped Santos for Real Madrid back in 2019. Since then the Brazil has gone on to establish himself as a world-class talent - winning two Champions League titles.
Back then the versatile attacker selected the Bernabeu as his next destination despite extensive interest from Edwards and Liverpool. But a perfect storm means the time may soon come for Rodrygo to finally arrive at Anfield.
Real Madrid would accept £75m to £79m for Rodrygo
The winger has cut an unhappy figure at Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso - with only three LaLiga starts in his campaign to date.
Rodrygo is without a goal in 30 matches for Los Blancos - equalling a club record - and looks very much like a player in need of a move.
According to a report in Caught Offside club president Florentino Perez would be prepared to accept €85m to €90m (£75m to £79m) for Rodrygo - who remains under contract in the Spanish capital until 2028.
“Rodrygo could be on the exit door at Real Madrid this January and Liverpool and Arsenal are preparing their bids,” a report reads.
“Real Madrid are willing to accept an offer in the region of €85-90 million for the Brazilian attacker.”
Rodrygo lined up to replace Salah
Salah for his part is going to be out of contract in 2027 - but talk has ramped up in recent days suggesting the Egyptian King is set to be sold next summer.
The 33-year-old retains interest from Saudi Arabia as well as MLS - and his exit could well usher in the Rodrygo era on Merseyside.
“He is being eyed by the club to take them into the post Mohamed Salah era,” the report concludes.
