Michael Edwards is the mastermind behind Liverpool’s move for Florian Wirtz. Here’s how he made it happen.

Liverpool are on the brink of an improbable deal for Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker was entirely expected to join Bayern Munich after leaving Bayer Leverkusen but now he's heading to Anfield.

At least, that's where all the signs are pointing.

Wirtz is one of the biggest talents in world football right now and Liverpool never really make deals like this. And by 'like this', we mean a £100m+ transfer that may well break the English and German records.

It's a market Liverpool never operate in but here they are, about to land the biggest signing of the entire summer. So how has that happened?

Michael Edwards, that's how.

Sport Bild reports that Edwards first got in contact with Wirtz for a transfer all the way back in 2020. The playmaker was still a youth player at Koln but would join Leverkusen that year.

Edwards refused to give up, however, and maintained contact and interest in Wirtz ever since. Anfield Watch understands Liverpool actually tried to sign the player from Leverkusen in January 2021, before he even had a full senior season under his belt.

That £50m offer was rejected, however, and Liverpool have been forced to wait for that opportunity. Edwards would leave Liverpool a year later but on his return to the fold in 2024, he rejuvenated the push for Wirtz.

That's now paid dividends as Liverpool are in pole position to seal a deal. This one could even be completed this week.

It's an incredible statement to the Premier League, too, as Liverpool refuse to rest on their laurels. The Reds are champions, of course, and will react to that with the biggest transfer in their history.

This is no mere opportunistic deal, though. Wirtz has been the plan for a very, very long time. Now it's finally happening.
