Liverpool in contact for near perfect free centre-back deal
Liverpool are in need of experienced centre-backs.
The Reds could be set to lose Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign. A little further down the line and Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out of contract in 2027.
Richard Hughes and Arne Slot have taken steps to strengthen the backline into the future - through the signings of Mor Talla Ndiaye, Jeremy Jacquet, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Giovanni Leoni.
But those players are young and at the outset of their careers. Losing Konate - as well as Van Dijk and Gomez - will mean the Premier League champions are short of top-quality experienced defenders.
The Anfield side have been reported to be chasing defenders like Nico Schlotterbeck and Alessandro Bastoni. Both of those fit the bill as experienced, left-sided centre-backs with bags of quality.
But there is another defender residing MUCH closer to home and who will be shortly available on a free transfer.
Liverpool now in contact over Senesi deal
It’s Marcos Senesi - a player adored by Arne Slot during their time together at Feyenoord and signed by Richard Hughes for Bournemouth during his time as technical director.
Senesi, 28, is out of contract at Bournemouth at the end of the season and indicated his intentions to move on. According to a report in Fichajes the Argentina international is now a target for Liverpool having reached out to the Merseysiders about a deal.
“Liverpool's entourage has received a proposal that could change the team's defensive landscape ahead of the next summer transfer window,” the report reads.
“The protagonist of this story is Marcos Senesi, the solid 28-year-old Argentine defender, who has already formally communicated to AFC Bournemouth his firm decision to seek new horizons at the end of the current campaign.
“Liverpool's board believes that securing a center-back of this caliber on a free transfer is a near-perfect financial and sporting move.
“Liverpool is now considering how quickly to finalize the deal before external competition becomes uncontrollable and the player chooses another club.”
Marcos Senesi: Situation summary
Marcos Senesi is a 28-year-old left-footed centre-back for Bournemouth, standing 1.85m and capped by Argentina, who has re-established himself as a defensive leader in 2025/26 after earlier injury-hit campaigns.
A proactive, front-foot defender, he steps out aggressively to engage forwards, is comfortable defending large spaces, and brings strong anticipation and timing in duels.
In possession he is noted for his progressive passing: Senesi ranks among the Premier League’s top centre-backs for deep completions and line-breaking passes, frequently initiating Bournemouth’s build-up from the left side.
Signed from Feyenoord in 2022 for around €15m, his Bournemouth contract expires on 30 June 2026 and he has rejected multiple renewal offers, meaning he is set to leave on a free transfer this summer.
Juventus and Barcelona are among several Champions League-level clubs monitoring him, with the defender expected to prioritise a move to a top European side.
