Liverpool can replace Diaz with SENSATIONAL wonderkid deal
The football world was shocked this week by the relegation of Lyon to Ligue 2.
One of European football’s most prestigious clubs, financial issues led to the decision to demote Lyon to the second tier.

The club, which is owned by John Textor, intend to appeal the DNGC’s decision but as things stand they will be kick off in the French second division next term.

Their drop into Ligue 2 has led to speculation that several talents could be offloaded. Prized-asset Rayan Cherki has already departed for Manchester City after Liverpool declined to follow through on their interest.
Lyon could be offloading talents
But Cherki is not the only player the Reds have had their eyes on at Lyon. Malick Fofana, 20, has been on the club’s radar over the course of 2025.
He joined Lyon from Gent in his native Belgium last year for an initial €17m but now looks destined to leave. The winger is under contract at OL until 2028 - but it is unlikely that he sees out his deal if Lyon remain in the second division.
Last season the Belgium international scored 11 goals and provided six assists in all competitions for Lyon and was in terrific form during their UEFA Europa League run.
Liverpool linked with €45m-rated Fofana
Now Caught Offside is reporting that Fofana is likely to be one of the first to leave the Groupama Stadium this summer - with Liverpool named as a potential destination.
“Lyon are looking a fee in the region of €45–50 million for the young attacker despite their financial troubles,” the report reads.
“Liverpool have identified Fofana as a player who could add depth and quality to their wide options as Arne Slot looks to refresh the squad for the upcoming campaign.
“With Luis Diaz’s future uncertain, he could be the ideal player to replace the Colombian at Anfield.”
Can Liverpool replace Diaz with Fofana?
Diaz, 28, is under contract until 2027 but could be sold this summer as a standoff over a new deal endures. With Fofana featuring exclusively on the left wing for Lyon, it could be an ideal opportunity for the Reds to invest in the future.
Although he might not make it into the lineup for every game under Arne Slot, Anfield would be the ideal development ground for one of European football’s most exciting talents.

With Diaz going for potentially €80m and Fofana available for as little as €45m, this could be a VERY savvy upgrade indeed.
