Surprise Liverpool decision invites MEGA offer

Liverpool have taken an interesting stance and it's going to bring about a massive offer. The Reds could be playing games here.

Liverpool have just sorted three major contract situations but they're certainly not done there. Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all played the majority of the campaign on expiring deals - the latter never actually signed a new one.

And there are fresh concerns heading into the next campaign. Both Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson are now entering the final year of their respective contracts.

Liverpool simply have to sort out those situations. Konate, for one, surely moves on if he doesn't commit his future to the club.

Robertson is a more complicated one. Whether he gets a new contract will depend on his form next season as well as his demands - the Scot can expect a significant pay cut if he's to stick around.

Ridiculously, though, that isn't all. Liverpool have another contract situation that's actually proving to be very surprising.

The Luis Diaz situation

Luis Diaz has two years remaining on his Liverpool contract. This is the only contract he's ever had at Anfield, too, signing it back in January 2022.

Liverpool typically agree deals with players to bump their pay and extend their stay. It can happen every couple of years for some.

That hasn't been the case here, however. Now the Reds have a major decision to make - agree a new deal with Diaz or treat him as a player who will depart in two years.

If so, a sale is on the cards. This is the final summer where Liverpool can secure a big fee for Diaz as they're not receiving one with just a year left on his deal.

But The Times claims Liverpool aren't looking to sell and haven't had any approaches. That would point to a new contract, only the club have 'no plans' to do that, either.

It's a surprising stance but one that tells us Liverpool are welcoming big offers. They're simultaneously saying they won't extend his stay while making it perfectly clear that they're under no true pressure to sell.

Al-Nassr hold a real interest in Diaz, as do Barcelona. Both could try to tempt Liverpool into a sale and with those two years remaining, the Reds will have to at least listen.

But we think they want to. It's the only reason why you'd put it out there that you don't want to sell while also letting everyone know there are no attempts to take the player off the table.

It's a very interesting summer for Diaz, then, who will see any move as one last major payday in his career.
