Liverpool go all in on €70m France midfielder
Liverpool declined to add a new midfielder in last summer’s record-breaking transfer window.
Despite spending £450m on new talent, sporting director Richard Hughes opted to keep Arne Slot’s midfield options intact.
The load was heavy on Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo was high during the Premier League title-winning campaign.
And this season we’ve already seen Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Jones and Endo suffer injuries. Therefore Liverpool’s decision to NOT add a midfielder may well come back to haunt them in time.
That’s why links with new midfielders make sense. English internationals like Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson are beginning to emerge on the radar.
Liverpool reignite Thuram interest
And one more name has now been mentioned by Fichajes in a new report. Detailing Real Madrid’s interest in Juventus star Khephren Thuram, the Spanish outlet claims that the 24-year-old has been identified as a target by Liverpool.
France international Thuram was previously on the Reds’ radar - before moving from Nice to the Serie A giants for around €20m back in 2024.
Since that move he’s gone from strength to strength - playing 60 times for the Bianconeri and establishing himself in the France setup.
Thuram is an all-action central midfielder who is under contract in Turin until 2029. Give his age, quality and contract duration, it’s been reported that Juve would seek €70m for his signature.
Thuram valued at €70m
“Since joining Juventus in 2024, his performance has sparked intense interest from both Real Madrid and Liverpool, with an estimated price tag of around €70 million being the cornerstone of potential negotiations,” the report reads.
In fact the report claims that the Reds have already had a bid turned down for Thuram - suggesting they did make a move last summer.
“Liverpool is entering the fray. Juventus has rejected offers from clubs like the Reds, demonstrating that it won't budge without a deal that meets its demands,” the report continues.
Liverpool hoping Juve drop the price
Midfield could well be a problem area in the months and seasons ahead for Liverpool - with Gravenberch requiring cover and competition and Mac Allister a long way off his best form.
Liverpool are going to have to hope to get in ahead of more potential suitors for Thuram - who is attracting attention from around Europe and the Premier League.
“Manchester City, Arsenal, and others are also eyeing the situation, which increases Thuram's competitive value in the market,” the report states.
“Liverpool, for its part, is still hoping Juventus will soften its stance, although the current refusal shows that it won't be an easy task.”
