Richard Hughes has seen enough: He now wants deal for TWO centre-backs

Liverpool haven’t had the easiest of starts to the season.

They have been plagued by indifferent form in the Premier League and look likely to surrender their crown. Their performance is all the more disappointing considering sporting director Richard Hughes spent £450m in the summer transfer window.

High-cost acquisitions were made in order to improve the title-winning squad but it all appears to have had the opposite effect. Arne Slot is struggling to integrate the new faces with the players already on the books.

And the problems look set to continue with problems emerging over Mohamed Salah.

Guehi can replace Konate

Meanwhile the future of Ibrahima Konate needs to be sorted out. The Anfield club face losing their French centre-back on a free transfer at the end of the season and already look short in that sector.

Having missed out on a deal for Marc Guehi over the summer - Slot has been forced to use Virgil van Dijk and Konate in every game due to a lack of proper alternatives.

But now it looks as though Hughes is ready to address a problem position with not one but TWO signings in the new year.

According to Football Insider Liverpool will be right there for Guehi - who will leave Crystal Palace on a free transfer at the end of the season.

And Liverpool also want Jacquet

And Liverpool will also be in the shakeup for Jeremy Jacquet - a prodigiously gifted 20-year-old French defender at Rennes.

“Liverpool have placed Jeremy Jacquet on their shortlist ahead of a potential move for the Stade Rennais defender,” the report reads.

“The 20-year-old looks to be the latest on the conveyor belt of supreme defensive talents to come out of France, with Arsenal also closely linked.”

Liverpool’s need for centre-backs will be increased in the coming seasons. Van Dijk as well as deputy defender Joe Gomez are both out of contract in 2027.

Giovanni Leoni - currently injured - will be expected to be a mainstay in defence for the years ahead - and he could be joined in 2026 by both Jacquet and Guehi.
