Jeremie Frimpong injury opens door to LATE right-back transfer deal
Liverpool are once again reeling from the loss of Jeremie Frimpong through injury.
The 25-year-old arrived at the club last summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth around £29.5m.
With Conor Bradley signing a new long-term contract, it was expected that the right-back duo would lead the Reds into a glorious post-Trent Alexander-Arnold future.
Only it’s not worked out like that.
The Netherlands’ international is now on his THIRD injury absence of the season - giving Arne Slot a major headache at right-back.
Bear in mind that Bradley is also injured and set to be sidelined until next season at the earliest.
Liverpool could be forced into transfer action
Slot has had to use players like Joe Gomez, Dominik Szoboszlai and even Curtis Jones at right-back this season - although he appears reluctant to give specialist Calvin Ramsay a shot.
Nonetheless with the Premier League champions currently without a first-choice right-back there could be an opportunity to do a transfer deal in what remains of the January window.
Thatâs according to James Pearce in the Athletic - who claims that the latest injury suffered by Frimpong opens the door to a late deal.
âUp until now, they have felt that there isnât a deal to be done this month that makes sense financially and have opted to wait for the summer,â the report reads.
Liverpool struggling for a right-back
âItâs a risk given their current predicament and it remains to be seen if Frimpongâs injury alters that stance.â
Itâs not going be easy to conclude a deal like this on such short notice - especially when selling clubs know Liverpoolâs needs.
There have been tentative links to right-sided defenders in recent days - including Martim Fernandes of Porto and Marco Palestra at Cagliari.
Reported long-term target - Feyenoordâs Givairo Read - is currently out injured.
Slotâs needs are made all the more pronounced due to the latest injury suffered by Gomez - who collided with Alisson Becker during the Premier League defeat at Bournemouth last week.
It all meant that Wataru Endo was basically the only choice to come on for Frimpong in midweek against Qarabag when Frimpong was struck down during the early stages of the 6-0 victory.
