Ideal midfield signing delivers INSANE Liverpool come and get me plea

Liverpool have always looked to improve their senior squad in any way they can, so long as the transfer makes sense for all the parties involved. Opportunistic moves are also pounced on.

The signings of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak took a lot of time, effort and planning. Last summer in particular, the transfer market had very few high-class strikers available, despite the how extreme the demand was for centre-forwards at a lot of the big clubs. The Reds had to do their research.

With someone like Florian Wirtz, however, it was generally understood that a move to Germany was guaranteed, and so when it became apparent that England was also a destination he'd consider, the club had to act quickly to put make themselves come across as an enticing option for him to look at.

A lot of money was exchanged in each of those deals, and Liverpool's intention to be as ambitious as possible is one of the great things that fans love about the club. But the recruitment team also tries to be aware of 'opportunistic' moves, which can cost as little as nothing, and still have a huge impact.

In one of the Premier League matches this past weekend, it became apparent that a potential midfield signing could be on the move, who would boost Arne Slot's squad massively if he joined.

Bentancur's lone effort for Tottenham

In a 2-1 losing effort for Spurs at home to Aston Villa, Rodrigo Bentancur shone, scoring the opener after just five minutes, before delivering an all-round solo masterclass. The 28-year-old ordinarily plays as a deep-lying midfielder in a double pivot but on Sunday he was all over the pitch.

Alongside his goal, he created a chance, made two accurate long-balls, won a tackle and put in four clearances, one blocked shot and three recovers, in addition to succeeding in four of his six duels.

To say it was an off-day for Tottenham is perhaps a little unfair. Thomas Frank's side created four big chances across the 90 minutes. They merely got outplayed by a clinical XG-defying performance.

Nonetheless, the loss was the fourth time Spurs have dropped points in the Premier League this season through eight games, and it's clear that some of their leaders need to step up more often.

In spite of Bentancur being 28 years old, he'd be a really useful player for Liverpool to have in their locker, being able to bring assurance to the midfield when the team is struggling to break through.

Of course, he'd be an outlier in terms of the age profile, but like we saw with Wataru Endo's signing three years ago, Liverpool are comfortable to make cheap moves if they can help to bolster the side.

His statistical profile suggests that he could make a difference if Ryan Gravenberch was unavailable for a game, or perhaps he could fill-in alongside him if there was an injury crisis in the midfield.o-

In the summer, the Argentine is going to be available on a free transfer, since his contract expires in June, with contract talks yet to formalise a new deal. Should his situation remain unresolved going into the January transfer window then Liverpool could put in a last-gasp offer.

By no means would this move be high on the priority list, but it could be a stroke of genius.
