There's real excitement at Liverpool. They believe they've got a talent up there with the absolute best around.

Liverpool had a summer unlike anything we’ve ever seen before as they went wild in the transfer market. The Reds moved for some simply incredible players.

Florian Wirtz was the first to make genuine waves. Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign the German playmaker, securing one of the world’s most exciting players in the process.

Still only 22, Wirtz is destined to be one of the defining stars of his generation. And he’ll do it in Red.

Alexander Isak was the biggest signing in financial terms, though. Liverpool didn’t just break their transfer record for a second time by signing him from Newcastle United - they broke the British transfer record for the first time in 30 years.

Isak is now the new no.9 and one of the very best on the planet.

However, when all is said and done, it’s entirely possible that this transfer window isn’t remembered for either signing. There’s one more world-class talent who could ultimately eclipse them all.

Hugo Ekitiké is a superstar

Maybe the most surprising signing of the summer was Hugo Ekitiké. Not in isolation but in hindsight.

After all, Liverpool signed Isak to be their main striker and went into the window planning on bringing him to Anfield. Yet they still paid £80m to sign Ekitiké.

There’s a very good reason for that, too. They believe the Frenchman might actually be one of the greatest talents in the world at centre-forward.

The Athletic explains it. They claim that Liverpool’s underlying research suggests only Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland looked better at Ekitiké’s age.

“The underlying data from director of research Will Spearman convinced Liverpool to take the plunge,” writes James Pearce. "It showed that Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe were the only strikers to have shown greater potential at a comparable age."

It’s certainly exciting to see. Ekitiké has every single tool to make it at the highest possible level and we’re already seeing it.

He’s scored three times in his first four games and looks like a natural fit already. If this is what he’s doing as a 22-year-old in his first month, what can we expect down the line?

And that’s why Liverpool paid the money despite the Isak plans. Ekitiké feels like a generational talent and one who can be the Reds’ leading man, should he fulfil his potential.
