How Arsenal could help Liverpool deal for Julian Alvarez

The Reds made huge attacking signings in the summer, but since the profiles of the new additions are relatively flexible, it's plausible that Liverpool could be on the hunt for more forwards soon.

After all, no wingers joined the Reds in spite of Luis Diaz leaving to join Bayern Munich and with the club aware that Mohamed Salah had now turned 33 years old, nearing closer to the end of his career.

Furthermore, the depth behind Salah and Cody Gakpo is particularly limited, so it's entirely plausible that we could see more additions in that area of the pitch, although Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike could be turned into left-sided players if Arne Slot is willing. They both enjoy that side of the pitch.

If the Frenchman was moved around a little more, then someone to accompany Alexander Isak might be added to the club's shortlist. In the Champions League on Tuesday, a clear candidate emerged.

Alvarez is a special talent

When Arsenal hosted Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night in the Champions League, it was remarkable how different the Spanish side performed compared to their visit to Anfield. To say the matches were polar-opposites doesn't really do it justice.

At the Emirates, the visitors had just one shot on target, creating 0.67xg in chances. It was dismal.

When we compare that to the contest at Anfield just over a month earlier, when Diego Simeone's side scored twice and had four shots, it's quite remarkable how different the defensive efforts were.

Furthermore, it has to be noted that Julian Alvarez was playing in the recent contest, and while Atletico generally had an awful evening, losing 4-0, the Argentine was trying everything to score.

Hitting the woodwork from a nothing chance was just one example of the brilliance he showcased.

And so we're met with an interesting scenario. Following the embarrassing defeat, a report from news outlet Diarro SPORT was published, claiming that Alvarez is questioning the Atletico project.

In a post via Deadline Day Live, it said: "He thinks that if he cannot win titles with the club, it would be better to leave in search of trophies. The big defeat against Arsenal has compounded this feeling."

It is added that Barcelona are lurking at his situation, but Liverpool have also been long-term admirers of his and a potential squad shake-up could facilitate an approach for him.

Of course, spending big money on three strikers in two seasons is an obscene idea, but so would spending £450m in a transfer window prior to last summer. FSG have shown they can be ambitious.

So we're talking about a far-fetched idea, but as mentioned earlier, if Ekitike flourishes in areas outside of the striker role, then we might have a spot for Alvarez - in theory. Either way, whichever side is able to secure the 25-year-old's services will have well and truly hit the jackpot.
