Liverpool completed £450m worth of spending in last summer’s transfer window. We saw that club break the British transfer record TWICE - in landmark deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

But sporting director Richard Hughes was active in other sectors of the squad too - with upgrades coming in the goalkeeping position, in defence, and up front.

One area of the first-team squad that didn’t get any attention however was central midfield. In fact we saw certain options leave the club in the shape of James McConnell - on loan to Ajax - and Tyler Morton - who joined Lyon on a permanent transfer.

It means Arne Slot largely has the same midfield options available to him this season as he did during the successful 2024/25 Premier League title-winning campaign.

But the strain began to tell during the second half of the season for certain players - including Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.

Accordingly there may be some concerns within the club that Slot does not have enough quality to work with in the middle third.

That’s perhaps why we have seen so many transfer links to midfielders in recent times - including reports mentioning Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

But there is another contender emerging for a Merseyside arrival and it could happen as soon as January according to a new report in TBR Football.

Liverpool hold internal talks about Camavinga

“Liverpool are keeping close tabs on Eduardo Camavinga’s situation at Real Madrid,” the report reads.

“Liverpool’s recruitment department is looking at potential options heading into the New Year.

“Camavinga’s name has been discussed internally by Liverpool, and he is very much an option, should they indeed pursue another player for that role.”

Camavinga, 22, joined Madrid back in 2021 from Rennes and has been a solid campaigner for the 15-time European champions.

Camavinga struggling for Madrid starts

However the France international is finding starts harder to come by under Xabi Alonso - and he has even lost out on his auxiliary role at left-back.

Alvaro Carreras is now a specialist in the position - with Dani Ceballos, Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde well-established in the midfield reckoning.

Accordingly there could be an opportunity for Richard Hughes to do a deal for the left-footer. He’s got a contract at the Bernabeu until 2029 - but his lack of starts could see the World Cup finalist make a play to leave the club before then.
