Game over for Curtis Jones as three clubs circle England midfielder
Before Liverpool’s weekend game against Manchester City there had been some degree of focus on Curtis Jones.
The Athletic declared that the England international considered himself ready to start in big games for the Reds - a stance at odds with Arne Slot’s selection policies this season.
Although Jones has been a more-than-useful rotation option for the Premier League champions this season there has been a reluctance on the part of the head coach to start him against top-class opposition.
Before Sunday the 25-year-old failed to start in Premier League matches against Arsenal (twice), Chelsea, Manchester United and away at Man City.
In the Champions League too the six-cap midfielder was left out of the Real Madrid game - arguably Liverpool’s best performance of the season.
Jones dropped for big game once again
Therefore the City game at Anfield was a big test for Slot in relation to his use of Jones. Of course he opted to use the homegrown player only from the bench - offering him the last few minutes of the controversial 2-1 defeat.
That will be a source of huge disappointment for Jones - whose contract expires in less than 18 months. Liverpool showed signs of being ready to cash in on Jones in the January window - listening to interest from Tottenham and Inter Milan.
And if no new deal is signed - particularly before the summer - then we could see his long-term future come under scrutiny once again.
Newcastle, Spurs and Villa want Curtis Jones deal
A report in TEAMtalk is now claiming that Newcastle have got their eyes on Jones as a potential replacement for either Sandro Tonali or Joelinton - who both look set to leave St. James’ Park.
Aston Villa - and of course Tottenham - are also listed as suitors as it appears we are approaching Jones’ endgame at Anfield.
Unable to make a convincing breakthrough under Slot at Anfield - particularly in the biggest matches - Jones could opt to take his chances elsewhere in order to gain a more prominent role.
He’s got the talent to do it but it would be a shame for fans to see another homegrown talent walk out the door.

Jones is an attacking midfielder so his complete lack of defensive awareness can be forgiven to a degree. However, an attacking midfielder who hardly assists or scores is not much use. He recycles the ball with the best of them and is easy on the eye, until he casually loses possession. Time to move him on and get a more effective player.
