Liverpool completed a landmark summer transfer window. Sporting director Richard Hughes recruited around £450m worth of talent - with several new options added in attack.

The Reds broke the British transfer record twice - first for Florian Wirtz and a second time for Alexander Isak.

We’ve seen Darwin Nunez leave for Al-Hilal - where he has made a good start - and Luis Diaz has joined Bayern Munich.

Chiesa's Champions League disappointment

Liverpool wanted to create space in the squad - and the budget - for new players and it was perhaps a surprise that Federico Chiesa ultimately stayed put.

The Italian, 27, was heavily linked with the exit door all summer and didn’t go on tour to Asia with the rest of the squad.

Atalanta, AC Milan and Napoli were among the Serie A sides suggested as a potential destination for the winger but he knuckled down and won game time in Liverpool’s opening fixtures of the season.

Chiesa emphasised his cult-hero status with a goal on matchday one against Bournemouth but more disappointment was to follow.

He was left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad in favour of Rio Ngumoha and it hasn’t taken long for those transfer rumours to resurface.

Roma to come back for Chiesa this January

Roma were another team recently linked with Chiesa - with new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini described as a big fan.

And now a report on Il Romanista claims that the Italian capital side will seek to complete their “unfinished” business for Chiesa in the January window.

“Among the unfinished deals, one stands out that could have brought a big name in attack to the Giallorossi side: Federico Chiesa,” the report reads.

“The former Juventus winger, now at Liverpool, had been left out of the Champions League squad and Roma had attempted to sign him, but the deal didn't materialize before the transfer window closed.

“However, his name could come back into fashion in January. Gasperini considers him perfect for his playing system, and Chiesa himself, eager to relaunch himself after a difficult few months in England, would welcome a return to Serie A, especially to regain a spot in the national team.”

Chiesa is under contract at Anfield until 2028 - earning a reported £120k per week. He is very much a backup to Mo Salah these days but with Liverpool possessing Frimpong as another right-wing option the club may opt to cut their losses on Chiesa.
