Fabrizio Romano confirms record-breaking signing is only 'a matter of time'
Liverpool have ramped up their spending in recent years on marquee signings.
And while not all of them have been successful in the past, this latest buy holds a lot of promise.

Back in 2018, Liverpool spent big on Alisson from Roma and Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton. The Brazilian was a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time (£67m) and the Dutchman was the most expensive defender of all time (£75m) although again, that record didn't last very long.
Such a significant financial outlay on two players was a rarity and in Liverpool's case, this down to how difficult it is to feel confident enough that the asset is worth the money.
In 2022, the signing of Darwin Nunez was a gamble to say the least, based on the potential that the Uruguayan had shown in the Portuguese league, but three years down the line, it's clear that he couldn't live up to his transfer fee, which could've been £85m, but will now be £76.8m instead.
However, an element of cautiousness will now need to be taken when big-money moves are considered and the Reds are now reportedly on the brink of another one.
Wirtz to Liverpool is now 'just a matter of time'
Florian Wirtz is the player who will be taking the hot-seat as Liverpool's most expensive player.
Despite being just 22 years old, he has already been Leverkusen's player of the year twice and his talent has been described as 'world class'. As such, a player of that stature commands a high price tag.
According to reports last night, that fee is likely to be £100m with add-ons of £13m - a package which converts to a €134m sum that you might also see floating around the internet.
If the Reds can get a deal across the line, it will blow the club's previous record transfer fee out of the water by at least £23m and potentially even by £36m if Wirtz's move is as successful as we hope.
Building on the update in the saga last night, Fabrizio Romano spoke about his insight on the deal.
He said: "It's very close. Extremely close.
"There have been new contacts in recent hours, and I've always been optimistic - I remain optimistic. I think Florian Wirtz will be a Liverpool player. I maintain my position."
"It's just about finalising the agreement club to club. The agreement with the player has been completely done for around two weeks. He only wants Liverpool - the player is just waiting for them.
"I think it's just a matter of time. In the next few days, the deal should get done."
Over the past few days, fans have been getting a little uncomfortable about the radio silence about the deal, especially when personal terms were agreed two weeks ago, but it seems as though Fabrizio is saying everything he can but the 'here we go' that we're all waiting for.
A deal of such magnitude was always going to take time, and deep down, we're all aware of that.

But the player is a serious talent and the prospect that we could lose out on him after weeks of negotiations is a truly heartbreaking thought. Fingers crossed, we'll receive confirmation soon.
