'Possible destination': Liverpool get green light to sign England midfielder

Liverpool declined to make any midfield signings in the summer transfer window.

Sporting director Richard Hughes spent £450m upgrading Arne Slot’s Premier League title-winning squad but left out midfield from the equation.

Indeed we saw midfielders leave - in the shape of Tyler Morton, Harvey Elliott and James McConnell - and none of them were even replaced.

Now the Reds are perhaps counting the cost of a lack of midfield numbers as the strain begins to tell.

Liverpool need extra midfield quality

Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister have already missed matches this season due to various knocks - and now Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch are absent with injuries.

Arne Slot had limited options to begin with - even fewer than when he joined for the 2024/25 season - and now it appears the Reds are ready to fix their problems in the middle third.

Links with Eduardo Camavinga and Adam Wharton are by this stage well-established - and now we could see another England midfielder come on the radar.

Liverpool tipped for Elliot Anderson deal

Elliot Anderson joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle in a £35m, PSR-beating deal in 2024. The 23-year-old midfielder has gone from strength to strength in the Tricky Trees’ lineup - even becoming a mainstay in Thomas Tuchel’s England regime.

It may be only a matter of time before Anderson moves on - and according to transfer expert Dean Jones in TEAMtalk - Liverpool will be right there for his signature.

Encouragingly for the Reds, it appears two candidates in the shape of Newcastle and Manchester United will be soon ruled out.

Liverpool a possible destination for Elliot Anderson

“I don’t think Anderson would close the door on returning to Newcastle and there is no issue around that specifically, but the thing that makes me question how likely it is regards the other options he is going to have,” Jones said.

“At the moment Man United, Liverpool and Man City all seem possible destinations for him and when those sorts of doors open up, is he going to go back to somewhere he has already played?

“As a player you surely always want to feel a sense of progression, so Newcastle are going to have to be in a very strong position if they are to enter a battle to sign him and then win it.

“I have to say I don’t think the Man United move is quite as nailed on as some people seem to make out.

“While he is on their list I get the impression there are still some reservations about whether he is the ideal fit as a midfield partner for Bruno Fernandes. That’s something they continue to explore.”

Anderson is under contract at the City Ground until 2029 - and has also come on the radar of Real Madrid in recent weeks according to Defensa Central.

Liverpool need to get in ahead of the competition and fast.
