Liverpool consider UNTHINKABLE Curtis Jones deal
Liverpool are running into a contract problem over Curtis Jones.
The 24-year-old homegrown midfielder has entered the final 18 months of his current deal - which expires in summer 2027.
If no agreement is reached then the two-time Premier League title winner could walk out of the door for nothing.
And right now renewals for Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai would appear to be sporting director Richard Hughes’ priority.
Chelsea tipped off about potential Jones deal
Jones last signed a contract extension back in 2022 - when he wasn’t such a key player in the team.
That means his contract will be worth much less than his current teammates in the same position and a renewal will cost Liverpool plenty in additional wages.
Their wage bill is already the highest in English football and it remains to be seen whether the Anfield club are willing - or able - to satisfy the England international’s demands.
Tottenham were reported to be ready to test Liverpool’s resolve over Jones just a few days ago - expressing an interest in concluding a deal valued at around £30m.
Selling Jones in January is unthinkable
Those rumours haven’t gone away - but there is another team now seeking to capitalise on Jones’ contract uncertainty with Liverpool.
Chelsea are aware of the player’s situation - according to Chelsea insider Simon Phillips - and have been alerted to the fact that he could be available right now in the January window.
The window closes next Monday so it leaves the Blues around a week to trash out a deal with Hughes and Co. Liverpool fans will be up in arms about the prospect of losing another homegrown talent - so soon after Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid.
However if Jones is stalling on a new contract then there is only one likely outcome - Liverpool will find a buyer before his value drops to zero.
The Merseysiders however are already light on numbers in midfield and selling Jones without sourcing a replacement would be unthinkable.
