Liverpool's golden chance to SAVE England forward after scathing attack

One Newcastle insider has launched an astonishing attack on Anthony Gordon - and it could open the door to Liverpool saving their former academy player.

Gordon, 24, was heavily linked with Liverpool back in 2024. In fact, during that summer’s European Championship, at one stage it looked likely he would move back to Merseyside.

The winger was in the Liverpool system until the age of 11 - before embarking on his football journey with Everton and then Newcastle.

He remained at the club that summer - with the Geordies managing to stave off PSR issues with sales elsewhere - and even signed a new contract committing him to St. James’ Park.

That appeared to put an end to any speculation linking the England international with a return to Anfield.

But the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards wrote an astonishing screed against the club’s No10 - accusing him of picking and choosing the matches he performs in.

The Newcastle journalist also insists that Gordon “has not been the same” since missing out on his move to Liverpool in summer 2024.

And he even draws an unfavourable comparison between Gordon and now-Liverpool striker Alexander Isak - who left Newcastle for Anfield in a £125m deal over summer.

“This is not the first time we have had reason to question Gordon’s hunger and determination,” he writes.

“A year ago, I questioned both Gordon and Alexander Isak – who we now know was already thinking about leaving the club – as they started the season badly.”

Gordon has arguably been one of the best players in the Champions League this season - scoring four times in three matches - but admittedly has been under par in the Premier League.

However Newcastle on the whole have been misfiring - sitting 13th - and Gordon also missed three matches owing to suspension.

Attacks against Anthony Gordon have begun

He had to play centre-forward in the early stages of the season while Isak remained on the sidelines. And an outing at Anfield against the Reds brought an expulsion owing to a bad foul on Virgil van Dijk.

“Since Gordon thought he was getting a move to Liverpool in June 2024, he has not been the same force for Newcastle,” Edwards claims.

“Gordon has gone through the motions too often for Newcastle. He is not giving the team or his manager what they expect. It is about time he realised he will never be a top player until he consistently plays well."

Wow.

It may be only a matter of time before the Scouser moves on from the North East - and Liverpool will have the chance to save him. Don’t rule out a bid in 2026.

Gordon is versatile and could certainly give Cody Gakpo a run for his money on the left. He clearly ranks highly for Liverpool recruiters - who have had him on the list for a while now.

Richard Hughes could well strike for Gordon and make a Premier League star out of him.

The Magpie media had plenty to say about Isak in the run-up and aftermath of his dream move to Liverpool. And now the barbs against Gordon have started.
