Liverpool made big changes to their 2024/25 Premier League title-winning squad last summer.

We saw several big names arrive as part of a £450m overhaul - including British-record deals for Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.

To make room for the new faces Richard Hughes and Arne Slot also opted to cut ties with plenty of talent already on the books.

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez were the headline departures - while deals were also completed for the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Nat Phillips, Jarell Quansah, Tyler Morton and Ben Gannon-Doak.

Sporting director Hughes also played the loan market - with James McConnell and Harvey Elliott both leaving for spells away.

Harvey Elliott to Aston Villa not working out

In the case of Elliott however it was expected that his one-season loan spell at Aston Villa would become permanent in the summer of 2026. As part of the arrangement, Villa would pay ÂŁ35m for Elliott if he reached a 10-game minimum.

It doesn’t appear that it’s going to work out like that - with the 22-year-old not playing any football for Unai Emery’s side since October 2.

The Reds have been tipped to “intervene” in their midfield star’s loan spell - with the club reported to be annoyed at how the deal is working out.

That’s according to a new report in Football Insider - which claims that a move to Major League Soccer is now beckoning for Elliott in January.

Liverpool are 'hugely annoyed' over Elliott

Because the schemer has played for two clubs already this season, only a move to a league whose season overlaps would see Elliott eligible to represent another team.

And the report makes the claim that interest in Elliott is hotting up with the 2026 MLS season due to commence shortly after the January window closes.

“Liverpool are hugely annoyed with the lack of gametime that their starlet is receiving, while the situation has also angered Elliott as well,” the report reads.

Interest mounting from MLS in Elliott

“There are discussions planned between the two parties to try and reach some sort of resolution, while there is also interest mounting from the MLS.

“His current stint with Aston Villa is set to become permanent if he makes 10 appearances for his loan club, but the Merseysiders are now expected to intervene before it can get to that stage.”

Elliott joined the Reds as a teenager back in 2019 from Fulham - going on to win two Premier League titles with his boyhood favourites.

He was unable to make a decisive breakthrough under Arne Slot last season however and with his contract expiring in 2027 it was decided that an exit should be sought.

It’s clear this transfer isn’t working out as expected - for the club and the player - and he could well be on the move once again in the new year.
