Liverpool Transfer News: Alexander Isak is FURIOUS with Newcastle

Liverpool have been admirers of Alexander Isak all summer, but we never thought we'd sign him.

His situation was very much one of 'not for sale' and in part, that stance still remains true, but the player has decided he's had enough with Newcastle's failed transfer window shenanigans.

The potential signing of Liverpool's new striker Hugo Ekitike might have offered Isak a glimmer of hope that the Magpies were serious this summer, but since the Reds embarrassingly stole him away from them, it appears as though the Swede might want to follow the Frenchman over to Merseyside.

He announced his intention to 'assess his options' last week, which means he's open to leaving. But how exactly did we get to this point, despite Newcastle's disappointing summer endeavours?

Newcastle drove Isak away

The player was essential to the Toon qualifying for this season's Champions League and the EFL Cup win must surely have created a bond between him and the supporters forever. He secured silverware.

Well, it appears as though the compliments that have been thrown Isak's way have led him to consider what his worth is to Newcastle. He's regarded as the Premier League's best striker.

Generally speaking, world class players deserve to be paid as much and the Swede's wages were not reflective of the talent he has and the significant contributions he was making to the team.

According to Capology, he is currently earning £120,000 a week, which is low when you consider there are a number of clubs that would happily offer him £300,000 a week to feature in their side.

Liverpool are indeed one of them and not only are the wage demands available for him, but the Reds' situation in regard to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) spending is good. His transfer is affordable.

So why couldn't Newcastle give him his demands? Their sporting director made a bold call.

Craig Hope spoke on his YouTube channel about the entire situation and revealed how it happened.

He said: "Darren Eagles, the Chief Executive, brought in Paul Mitchell as the new Sporting Director without Eddie Howe's prior knowledge... and immediately he ruffled a few feathers.

"Paul Mitchell looked at the situation he'd walked into and said, 'Why is Alexander Isak with four years left to run on his contract? He's already among the highest earners at the club. Why is he getting a new deal? No, you can't have that. We can't afford to pay you that [his wage demands].'

"That is a business decision... I think you and I would understand that. [But] What it doesn't account for is the human reaction at the other end of it. Alexander Isak and his camp were 'absolutely furious'.

"There was a real angst there with the club [and] with the hierarchy, that he thought he'd missed out on something he was owed."

As such, the Swede is feeling somewhat betrayed and leaving Newcastle was likely never in his thinking before the situation with his new contract unfolded. But now, he's happy to look elsewhere.

Liverpool have been reported extensively by Fabrizio Romano as favourites to sign him and it's in Newcastle's hands to whether we bid for him, depending on if they're willing to let Isak his move.

Although now it's been revealed that Newcastle are unable and unwilling to pay him a respectable wage, it feels more likely that ever that he will be joining a new team. The Reds might just be them.
