Liverpool have had their fair share of transfer frustrations as a result of Real Madrid in recent times.

With the club having been linked to the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham and Dean Huijsen, the decision-makers at Anfield could only watch on as primary targets chose the Bernabeu instead.

And then last summer things got even worse - when the Spanish capital club concluded a swoop for homegrown hero Trent Alexander-Arnold.

More pain could be in store for the Reds next summer - with Ibrahima Konate very much on the radar for a high-profile free transfer.

But the Reds are fighting back.

Liverpool want to beat Madrid to Wharton

Described as “fed up” in a report by Defensa Central, it’s thought that the Premier League champions will stop at nothing to beat their Spanish counterparts to the signing of one highly-regarded midfielder.

Adam Wharton, 21, has been a star for Crystal Palace since switching from Blackburn in February 2024. Not only has the schemer won the FA Cup and Community Shield, he has also broken into the England reckoning - travelling to Euro 2024 with the Three Lions.

It’s been a dizzying rise for Wharton, who is being looked at for a transfer by not only Liverpool but a whole host of top clubs in the Premier League and beyond.

'Everything points' to Wharton ending up at Liverpool

Real Madrid are one such club - but there is pessimism on the part of the 15-time European champions over the prospective signing of Wharton. That’s because they believe he is bound for Anfield - on a deal which is likely to take place in summer 2026.

“Liverpool are starting to get fed up with Real Madrid,” the report reads.

“The Spanish club snatched Trent Alexander-Arnold from them, are about to snatch Ibrahima Konaté, and in recent years have also signed some of the Reds' top transfer targets , such as Aurélien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham, and Dean Huijsen.

“They don't want history to repeat itself with Adam Wharton and are going all out from the start.

“Time will tell if they succeed or if, on the contrary, Florentino manages to change the way this operation is going. Right now, everything points to it ending up at Anfield.”

Wharton is surely destined for bigger things than Palace - and remains under contract at Selhurst Park until 2029. It’s only a matter of time before he makes the leap and given the Reds’ need for midfielders at present let’s hope this prediction comes true.
